16 Ways to Celebrate a Birthday at Disney World

There’s always something to celebrate at Disney World! From birthdays to anniversaries or first visits, we love celebrating at Disney World! If you have the opportunity to celebrate a birthday at Disney World, there are some ways that you can make it extra special and magical! Here are sixteen different ways that you can celebrate a birthday at Disney World.

Birthday at Disney World

Before You Go

Note Your Birthday Celebration on All Reservations: If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, be sure to note your birthday celebration. You should receive a call from a special Disney friend wishing you a “Happy Birthday!” If you are booking any dining reservations at a Disney restaurant, you can note your birthday celebration at the time of booking so the restaurant can celebrate with you, as well.

Book a Special Meal: Plan a special meal just for the birthday boy or girl. If it is a child (or someone young at heart), consider a character dining experience. You can find our list of the best character meals here. If it is just adults, try a signature dining experience. Or, if you’re looking for dinner and a show, try Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue or Spirit of Aloha.

Order an In-Room Gift or Celebration: Disney Floral and Gifts has a wide variety of in-room gifts and decorations available for purchase. Balloons start at just $9.99 while in-room celebrations begin at $275. Choose from a pre-made gift basket or build your own!

Book a Dessert Party: All four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks offer a dessert party for their nighttime spectaculars. You’ll get to enjoy the best views of Happily Ever After, Epcot Forever, Fantasmic, or Rivers of Light while sampling sweet treats and drinks. You can review all of the dessert parties here.

Book a Makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or Character Couture: You can transform into your favorite Princess, Knight, or other Disney Character with one of these makeover experiences. The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique provides makeover for children ages 3-12 at three locations- Magic Kingdom Park, Disney Springs, and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Character Couture is best for guests who are too old for the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, but can accommodate children, as well. Julie at Double Your WDW has a fabulous review of Character Couture, complete with photos.

Sail on a Fireworks Cruise: There are a few cruises available, each with a spectacular view and delicious desserts. Your kids will love the Pirates and Pals Fireworks Dessert Voyage departing from Disney’s Contemporary Resort. They’ll get to mingle with Captain Hook and Mr. Smee while they eat an array of desserts. Then, Peter Pan afterwards. Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise is a great option for families and couples looking for a great view and dessert without characters. If you’re looking to really splurge, Disney has private fireworks cruises starting at $299 plus tax.

Go Behind the Scenes on a Tour: You can go behind the scenes and learn more about how the magic is made at Disney World with one of their tours. Behind the Seeds in the Land Pavilion at Epcot is one of the more affordable options at just $29 per person. Caring for Giants at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is only $30 per person, but does have a minimum age requirement of 4 years. Disney’s Family Magic Tour at Magic Kingdom is fun for families with children of all ages.

Order a Birthday or Celebration Cake: Order a Mickey Mouse Celebration Cake for just $35 at participating restaurants. You can order in advance by calling (407) WDW-DINE or at the restaurant. You’ll be able to choose from chocolate or white chocolate flavors. You can also order a custom cake with your desired theme and decorations by calling (407) 827-2253 at least 72 hours in advance. Or, guests at least 10 years of age and older can try the cake decorating experience at Amorette’s Patisserie on Sunday through Thursday mornings at 9 am.

Make or Order a Birthday Shirt: You want everyone to know that you’re celebrating, right? In addition to your birthday button, you can either make or order a special birthday shirt. Some of our favorites are these Mickey birthday shirts, Minnie birthday shirts, best birthday ever shirts, birthday girl shirts, best birthday ever shirts, and best day ever shirts.

Birthday at Disney World

After You Arrive

Pick Up a Birthday Button: If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you can pick up a complimentary birthday button from the front desk. If not, you can stop by guest services inside any of the theme parks to pick one up. This free button will let everyone know that you are celebrating! You never know what kind of special surprises or pixie dust you could receive.

Have Characters Sign a Birthday Card for Autographs: If you bring a birthday card, you can have the characters sign that for a fun and unique souvenir. You could even bring a few to have “themes” like one for Disney Princesses, one for classic characters, and more.

Take a Ride in an Amphicar: Have you ever ridden in an Amphicar? With less than 400 left in the world, there’s a good chance that you haven’t. But, you can ride in an Amphicar at The Boathouse at Disney Springs. During the 25-minute guided tour, you’ll learn about the landmarks around Disney Springs. The current cost is $125 per car and holds 3-4 guests.

Purchase Birthday Ears: Disney has a HUGE variety of both Mickey and Minnie ears available throughout the parks and resorts. Magic Kingdom and Disney Springs have some of the best selections. New birthday ears will be the perfect accessory for your celebration. You can purchase the Mickey Ears Birthday Hat or Minnie Ears Birthday Headband.

Pick a Pearl in the Japan Pavilion: There’s a unique experience in the Japan pavilion at Epcot. It is both a fun experience and inexpensive souvenir. You can choose an oyster to be opened which will contain at least one beautiful pearl. If you’re extra lucky, you might even find an oyster with two pearls! You can even order a Cinderella carriage necklace holder for your pearl before you go.

Look for Photo Opportunities: Pose for a photo with your celebration button throughout the parks. Ask Disney PhotoPass photographers for magic shots, as well. Plus, if you stop by the PhotoPass Studio at Disney Springs, you can take pictures with some birthday inspired props and backgrounds. If you have Memory Maker, this experience is included at no additional cost.

Explore the World Showcase: The cast members working in each pavilion around the World Showcase are actually from the country that you are visiting in the World Showcase. These cast members are happy to write “Happy Birthday” in their native language for you as a fun (and educational) souvenir. Order an Epcot passport for them to write your birthday message in.

Top 10 Ways to Give Your Family a Surprise Disney Vacation

I am always so impressed with parents who can keep the secret while planning a surprise Disney vacation. Have you ever wanted to surprise your kids with a Disney World vacation, but just unsure the best way to do it? Whether it’s a first visit or a special celebration, it can be a lot of fun to plan a surprise Disney vacation. Here are ten different ways to give your kids a surprise Disney vacation!

surprise Disney vacation

1. Scavenger Hunt: You can hide clues throughout your home where they will eventually find the last clue revealing the big trip. You can even have them pick up small gifts at each stop to compile at the end. Some of the earlier clues can be more generic like sunglasses, new luggage, hats, and swim suits.

2. Gift Basket: You can give your children new luggage, backpacks, and other goodies that will be useful during your vacation. Some of the “essentials” include an autograph book, Mickey ears, Mickey drawstring bags, glow sticks, plush, and water bottles. You can even find a pre-made box here.

3. Disney-inspired Dinner: You can make an entire meal based on your favorite Disney movie. Disney Family has A TON of recipes to help you create the perfect menu for your big reveal. We always love Mickey waffles as a quick and easy meal. You can make mini Mickey waffles or classic Mickey waffles.

4. Book: There are some great planning and Disney inspired books that you can give your family. These are great if you’re going to reveal the big surprise a while before you leave. You can get everyone involved in the planning process this way. Some of our favorites include Birnbaum’s Official Vacation Guide, Birnbaum’s Walt Disney World for Kids, the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, the Hidden Mickeys of Walt Disney World and Disney World’s Hidden Mickeys.

5. Letter from Mickey: You can make a letter from Mickey Mouse for your kids letting them know that you’ll be coming to visit. Or, if you book your Disney World vacation with us, we will send your family a letter from Mickey Mouse in addition to an autographed picture to help with your surprise.

6. Custom Shirts: You can reveal your surprise Disney vacation with new shirts! If you are crafty, there is plenty of inspiration on Pinterest or you can always order some from Etsy or Amazon.

7. Character Call: If you are sailing on a Disney cruise, you can schedule a FREE call prior to your sailing from Mickey, Goofy, or Mickey and Minnie together. This can be a great way to tell the kids about your cruise!

8. Surprise at the Airport: If your kids aren’t big enough to read, you may be able to make it all the way to the airport before having to reveal the big surprise. Imagine the look on their faces as you pull up and they see all of the airplanes coming in and out!

9. A Box Full of Balloons, Characters, and More: If you can get a big cardboard box, fill it with Disney inspired goodies like balloons, plush, confetti, and more. Your kids will love unwrapping it and opening it to find surprises with clues revealing your vacation.

10. Puzzle: You can make your own puzzle at home or order one from Shutterfly to reveal your special message telling your family about their surprise Disney vacation. You can also find a beautiful wooden puzzle for a Disney World vacation or a Disney Cruise Line vacation.

Most Affordable Table Service Restaurants at Disney World

Since Walt Disney World reopened in July, dining plans have been unavailable. This can make eating in the parks on a budget relatively difficult. Food is often the biggest expense of a Disney World vacation. So, today we want to share with you the most affordable table service restaurants at Disney World.

Top Most Affordable Table Service Restaurants at Disney World

Inside the Theme Parks

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater: The atmosphere is almost as good as the food at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The whole family will love eating inside of a car at this old fashioned drive in movie theater. You can choose from burgers, pasta, sandwiches, chicken, and more, all $25 and under. If you’re looking for a treat, we also enjoy the desserts like their house-made candy bar, warm doughnut, and cookie shake.

The Plaza Restaurant: This charming parlor serves lunch and dinner inside Magic Kingdom Park at the end of Main Street, U.S.A.. You can try the home-style meatloaf, cheese steak sandwich, burger, or club sandwich for $22 or less! But, be sure to save room for dessert here. They have amazing seasonal milkshakes and delectable sundaes year round.

50’s Prime Time Cafe: You will feel like you really have traveled back to the 1950’s when you step inside of 50’s Prime Time Cafe at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. You’ll even have a chance to watch black-and-white clips from popular prime-time shows circa 1955 during your meal. All of the classics are on the menu- fried chicken, meatloaf, and pot roast. Or, just order the sampler to try a little of each. Just remember to keep your elbows off of the tables here.

Tony’s Town Square Restaurant: Tony’s Town Square Restaurant gets somewhat mixed reviews from guests, but we have had consistently good experiences there, as recently as October 2020. You can try pizza or a number of pasta dishes, with most being under $25 each. We recommend the shrimp alfredo or spaghetti!

Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria: You’ll enjoy a culinary tour of Southern Italy when you dine at Via Napoli in EPCOT. The whole family can easily share one of these amazing, authentic Neapolitan style pizzas. Via Napoli was even voted Critic’s Choice for “Best Theme Park Restaurant” by Orlando Sentinel.

Nine Dragons Restaurant: Nine Dragons Restaurant is hidden in the China pavilion at EPCOT. You can enjoy Cantonese, Mongolian, Szechuan, Hunan and Kiangche-style specialties under the soft glow of Chinese lamps. The menu offers spare ribs, kung pao chicken, fried rice, pork belly, and so much more for $25 or less. Nine Dragons even offers a family dinner for $26 per guest which includes your choice of soup, select entrees, and dessert.

Disney Springs

Disney Springs has a lot of affordable table service restaurants, as far as dining on property goes at least. Most of them are rated “$$” on the Disney World website which indicates that their pricing generally ranges from $15 to $34.99 per person. Below, I have listed my favorite affordable table service restaurants at Disney Springs.

Splitsville Dining Room: Did you know that you can dine at Splitsville without having to bowl? They have a full menu including pizza, sushi, salads, sandwiches and more. You can enjoy six different 13-inch pizzas for less than $20 each! We also love their Macho Nachos for just $16 which can also feed two people! If you have a rainy day or time outside the parks, stop by for a delicious meal and even some bowling.

Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ Kitchen: Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ Kitchen is the ultimate spot for comfort food. They have some of the best fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and sweet tea that I’ve ever had! You can enjoy any of their sandwiches, dinner salads, or kitchen (sampler) plate for under $20! They also offer a delicious weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

Rainforest Cafe: Rainforest Cafe is always a family friendly option where your kids will love the chance to journey into the Amazon, surrounded by animated animals to the sounds of thunder claps and sudden rainstorms. All of the sandwiches and burgers are under $20 in addition to some of the appetizers that could be served as a meal like the quesadillas, chicken strips, or pepperoni flatbread.

Planet Hollywood: You can dine among the stars at Planet Hollywood. The restaurant is full of movie memorabilia and TV’s of all sizes! You may just get to participate in a sing along during your meal. All of the burgers and sandwiches on the menu are under $20. Some of our other favorites include one of the biggest nachos we’ve ever tried, and the penne, chicken & broccoli pasta, each under $20, as well.

T-Rex Cafe: T-Rex is one of my favorite restaurants for families with boys because of the theming, including squawking pterosaurs, wooly mammoths, a massive undulating octopus and life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. Every 20 minutes, you’ll even get to experience a meteor shower, complete with rumbling and fiery “explosions.” You can enjoy burgers, quesadillas, flatbread pizza, and more for under $20.

City Works Eatery & Pour House: City Works Eatery & Pour House is Disney Springs’ newest dining establishment. It is located at the far end of the West Side, next to the NBA Experience. You can enjoy burgers, fish or chicken tacos, mac n’ cheese, or chicken wings here for under $20. This is also a great spot to watch your favorite game on TV.

If you’re traveling before October 29, 2020, don’t miss out on exclusive weekdays at Disney Springs savings!

Walt Disney World Resort Hotels

Did you know that you are welcome to dine at any Walt Disney World Resort Hotel, regardless of where you are staying? You can visit other hotels and enjoy some of their delicious dining options and even shopping, in many cases.

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop: You may feel like you’ve traveled back in time when you visit this nostalgic soda shop at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. They have a full dinner menu with six burgers and sandwiches, each under $20. The real “star of the show” here though is the dessert! They serve hand-dipped ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes, and more. The most expensive item on the menu is the Kitchen Sink at $35, which easily serves four.

Bonus: Beaches & Cream also offers a to-go menu of ice cream and beverages, and you can even enjoy your treats at a poolside table outside, overlooking Stormalong Bay.

Sanaa: You can enjoy a delicious dinner with some incredible views of the animals on the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas- Kidani Village. Keep an eye out for gazelles, zebras, giraffes, kudu, ostriches, cranes and more as you dine. Don’t miss the Indian-style Bread Service appetizer which includes five breads and nine different dipping sauces.

Kona Cafe: Kona Cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort with a menu inspired by the South Seas. If you’re starting your day here with breakfast, you have to try the Tonga Toast, a banana stuffed french toast. During dinner, you can enjoy poke bowls, sushi, glazed chicken wings, or lobster and crab macaroni & cheese for under $20 each!

Olivia’s Cafe: Olivia’s Cafe is often considered one of the best hidden gems at Disney World. This nautical themed restaurant serves Key West inspired dishes like conch fritters, crab cake, sea scallops, shrimp pasta and more. You can try the Duval Street Burger, Conch Flats Club Sandwich, or any of the appetizers for under $20 each.

Grand Floridian Cafe: We think the Grand Floridian Cafe at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is another great hidden gem, especially for brunch. During breakfast and lunch, you can enjoy pancakes, Mickey-shaped waffles, eggs benedict, and more, each for less than $20. You’ll also enjoy a nice view of the gardens at the resort.

As a reminder, reservations are strongly recommended for table service restaurants and can be made up to 60 days in advance in your My Disney Experience account.

From November 6 through December 30, 2020, you will be able to enjoy festive décor, themed merchandise, seasonal food & beverage offerings and entertainment all across Walt Disney World Resort. Holiday magic will be in full force at the four theme parks and Disney Springs, and Santa Claus will make time for special pop-up appearances at each location, waving and exclaiming holiday wishes to all.

Guests will be delighted by the sight of festive flotillas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, holiday promenades at EPCOT and merry motorcades at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Character cavalcades at Magic Kingdom Park will take on a special holiday twist, with Christmas friends on festive floats in their holiday finest. Gingerbread Men? Check! Elves and Reindeer? Check, check! And, we can’t forget the Toy Soldiers, who will join the Main Street Philharmonic as they march through Magic Kingdom Park, bringing musical holiday cheer for all to hear.

When night falls, special projection effects will give a festive look to Cinderella Castle this year, providing a colorful backdrop for our guests’ photos. The appearance of the iconic castle will be transformed with a rotating series of designs including a whimsical Christmas sweater and a regal overlay of red, green and gold ornamentation. This will be in place of the Castle Dream Lights. Other holiday experiences that draw big crowds will be on hiatus this year as well, such as Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and Candlelight Processional at EPCOT.

Of course, the holidays wouldn’t be complete without enjoying a meal among friends and family. Minnie Mouse will be hosting a yuletide gathering for all her friends at Hollywood & Vine at Disney’s Hollywood Studios starting November 6. Santa Goofy will be there, along with Minnie and more in their holiday best.

Over at Disney Springs, guests will discover Christmas around every corner as they come across a collection of elaborately-decorated Disney Christmas trees spread throughout this retail, dining and entertainment destination. In the evening, guests visiting areas within Town Center, West Side and The Landing will encounter a magical snowfall, adding an extra touch of wonder to their holiday shopping. And to top it off, Jock Lindsey will once again be turning his hangar bar into Jock Lindsey’s Holiday Bar complete with delightful holiday décor and a delicious limited-time menu filled with festive favorites.

Disney Resort hotels will also be decked out for the holidays, with their lobbies featuring iconic trees and other festive flourishes. However, guest favorite gingerbread displays will not return to any of the Walt Disney World Resort hotels this year due to physical distancing guidelines.

Starting a bit later in the 2020 holiday season at Disney World, highlights from the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays will return on Friday, November 27. Holiday kitchens will be offered around World Showcase promenade with favorites like American Holiday Table featuring Slow-roasted Turkey with Stuffing and Bavaria Holiday Kitchen with dishes like Cheese Fondue in a Bread Bowl.

9 Reasons You Will Love Staying at Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Disney’s Pop Century Resort is one of the official Walt Disney World Resort hotels, owned and operated by Disney. As a resort guest, you’re eligible for Disney’s Magical Express (complimentary airport transfers), complimentary transportation to and from the theme parks, complimentary parking at the theme parks, and so much more. We are discussing our 9 favorite reasons to stay at Disney’s Pop Century Resort in further detail below and think you’ll love staying here, too!

Price

First and foremost, we have to acknowledge what a great value it is to stay at this value resort. With prices starting at just $154 per night (in 2020 before any special offers), this is an amazing way to stay at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel on a budget. Outside of Disney’s All Star Resorts, this is the most economical option at Disney World.

Refurbished Rooms

The hotel rooms at Pop Century were recently refurbished and are beautiful! Disney replaced the double beds with two queen beds and removed the carpeting with a modern laminate flooring. The second queen bed even folds into the wall with a table and chairs underneath for additional space and seating in the room. They have a very updated and modern feel with Disney touches scattered throughout.

Disney Skyliner

The Disney Skyliner is Disney’s newest method of transportation, opening fall 2019. These gondolas offer quick and convenient access to both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. The Skyliner station sits between Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, making it a short walk from the 60’s section. It takes just 7 minutes of travel time to arrive at Hollywood Studios while only 12 minutes to arrive at EPCOT. Please note, there is a transfer station at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort when traveling to either park from Pop Century.

Everything Pop Shopping and Dining

Disney’s Pop Century Resort has a spacious food court and gift shop called Everything Pop Shopping and Dining. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Depending on the time of year, it may open as early as 6 am and remain open until as late as midnight. They have meals, snacks, and treats in addition to the resort refillable drink stations. You can even purchase a pizza meal deal with salad and breadsticks to feed a family of four for just $29.99!

Resort Activities

Even at this value resort, Pop Century has a team of entertainment staff that offers activities by the pool, Movies Under the Stars, and more. Most of this is included with your stay at no additional cost. So, if you’re spending time at the resort, don’t forget to check the activities calendar to find all that will be available during your visit.

Dedicated Buses

Unlike some Walt Disney World Resort hotels, Disney’s Pop Century Resort does not ever share buses with any other property. You will always enjoy a ride to and from the parks without having to make any additional stops on your way. You won’t even have to wait for multiple stops throughout the resort (as with many moderate and deluxe villa resorts) as Pop Century has one main bus stop at the front of the resort.

Photo Opportunities

There are larger than life statues throughout the resort that make for some amazing photo opportunities! Snap a picture with Goofy, just outside of Everything Pop Shopping and Dining. You’ll also find Mowgli and Baloo together in addition to Duncan Yo-yo’s and a Play-Doh container in the 60’s section. Other areas of the resort offer a tricycle, Roger Rabbit, Lady and the Tramp, a Rubix cube, foosball, and so much more!

Theming

The retro theming of Disney’s Pop Century Resort is fun for guests of all ages. Many parents (and grandparents) can relive their childhood with photos and relics from decades of the past. There are sections from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

Discounts

Disney’s Pop Century Resort has historically participated in most every discount that Disney offers. From free dining to room discounts, you have a great chance of being able to take advantage of additional savings on your stay here!

Have you ever stayed at Disney’s Pop Century Resort during your Disney World vacation? What was your favorite part? Be sure to let us know!

5 Things You Need to Order for Your 2021 Disney World Vacation

Things are a little different at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida now. Although the magic is absolutely still there, there are some changes that Disney has made to keep guests and cast members as safe as possible. Face coverings are now required, but there are also a few other things that we have found very helpful to order before your 2021 Disney World vacation.

Masks: Face coverings are required at the Walt Disney World Resort for all guests age two and up. They do need to be worn everywhere, from the theme parks to Disney Springs and even hotels. You can read Disney’s safety guidelines here. My kids and I prefer cloth reusable masks while my husband prefers disposable masks. You can wear whatever you are most comfortable in, as long as it meets Disney’s guidelines.

Cooling Towels: It’s hot almost year round in Florida and the masks will likely make you even warmer than you would otherwise be. This four pack of breathable cooling towels will stay chilled for up to three hours and even come with their own waterproof carrying case and carabiner clip.

Neck Fans: Another great option to help keep you cool during your vacation is neck fans. These rechargeable neck fans allow you to remain hands free while waiting in line or walking the parks. They even offer three speed levels and adjustable, rotating fans so you can control your comfort.

Lanyards: If you’re traveling with kids, you may find it helpful to bring a lanyard for them. Although they can only remove the mask while stationary and actively eating and drinking, it’s great to be able to clip their mask onto a lanyard rather than having to find somewhere clean and dry to set it down. My son has even continued to use his lanyard for his mask at school! This four pack of Disney lanyards can even cover the whole family for less than $10!

Face Wipes: We have found that our faces get pretty hot and sweaty under the masks. Although it’s nice to take a break at a relaxation station to cool off, we find face wipes extra refreshing. It can also help with any “maskne” concerns. We have used the Simple Cleansing Face Wipes with great success. They’re lightweight and easy to throw in your park bag.

Are you planning a 2021 Disney World vacation? We’d love to help! Our incredible services are 100% free to you. Plus, we’re giving a free reusable cotton face mask to all guests who book a 2021 vacation. Contact us today for more details.
