11 Tips for Visiting Universal Orlando Resort This Summer

11 Tips for Visiting Universal Orlando Resort This Summer

11 Tips for Visiting Universal Orlando Resort This Summer
Photo: Universal Orlando Resort

The parks, hotels, and CityWalk at Universal Orlando Resort are open and starting to welcome guests back. Things may look a little different in the parks from your last visit with new operational guidelines, but it’s still the same Universal that you know and love. You will find fun, new ways to experience the parks. The rides are just as thrilling, the pools just as relaxing, the characters just as entertaining, and the food just as good. Here are 11 tips for visiting Universal Orlando Resort this summer, including how to make your visit easier and more convenient.

1. Download and Use the Universal Orlando Resort App

Photo; Universal Orlando Resort

Take a minute (if you haven’t already) to download the Universal Orlando Resort app. It will help you navigate around the crowds, trim down your time waiting in queues, minimize physical interactions, and so much more! Here are the top features of the Universal Orlando Resort app:

  • Virtual Line experience for attractions
  • Mobile food and drink ordering for select restaurants
  • Interactive park map
  • Virtual wallet where you can purchase and house your park tickets, Express passes, and also set up your TapuTapu for your visit to Volcano Bay
  • Wait time alerts that you can set for when the times drop

Download it for FREE from the App Store and Google Play. Data and other charges may apply; check with your wireless provider’s rate plan for details.

2. Avoid Crowds with the Virtual Line Experience

Want to avoid crowds AND get a place in line faster on your favorite rides? The Virtual Line experience is the answer and it’s now available for even more attractions than before. You can access it via the app under “Virtual Line Experience” in the menu or per attraction on the interactive map. You then select your “Return Time”, show up, and ride. It’s that easy! The Virtual Line experience for attractions open throughout the day, so make sure to check the app often to see what is available. And while you’re waiting, you have free time to experience other rides, shows, or grab a bite to eat. Heads up, you have to be in-park to access the Virtual Line experience feature on the app.

3. Order Your Food Ahead of Time with Mobile Order

If you haven’t tried mobile order, prepare to have your theme park life changed. When your stomach is rumbling, jump on the app and select “Order Food and Drinks” from the menu. Then you select the venue and order your food. You can either do this for a quick pick-up and go, or for a quick-service restaurant where you will be seated in a special section for mobile orders.

Click here to get a step-by-step guide to mobile ordering on the Universal Orlando Resort app.

4. Make a Game Plan Beforehand

This is always one of my top recommendations for visiting the parks. Do your research and create a must-do list with all of the attractions, shops, shows, etc. you definitely want to do. Planning out where to start and using the app to navigate wait times and the Virtual Line experience will help you to do everything you are looking to do during your visit.

5. Get a More Personalized Experience With Social Distancing

Social distancing may slow down the queue for wait times temporarily, but it may make the rides and show elements even more special. For example, not having people right next to you in the queue may actually allow you to enjoy better conversations with your party as you wait. The spaced seating on the ride vehicle makes it feel like you have the ride to yourselves. Smaller groups and spaced standing through Poseidon’s Fury allows for a more intimate show. And having more space around character meet and greets allowed for no unexpected-guest photobombs in the background.

6. Take a Break in the U-Rest Areas

In addition to planning out what you want to do, make sure to slot in time to take breaks. There are new U-Rest areas sprinkled throughout the parks and CityWalk, where you can recharge with a drink or snack with your face covering off. You can find them in the following locations:

7. Take All the Photos!

Photo: Universal Orlando Resort

One thing you may find yourself doing more than usual at the parks is taking an exponentially large amount of photos. We’ve all missed the parks so much, and you’ll probably want to capture it all and share it with friends and family. Plus, it is pretty fun to take pictures in this new social distancing world. With more time saved with the Virtual Line experience and plenty of people-free space around you, you can capture some really great memories!

8. Early Park Admission Means More Time and Fewer Crowds

A huge benefit of staying at one of Universal Orlando Resort’s hotels is Early Park Admission into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This magical experience holds even more meaning and value today. Here’s what it is: if you stay at one of Universal’s hotels, you get exclusive access to the parks one hour before normal guest park hours with little to no crowds. Um, sign me up. Plus, when staying at the hotels, you don’t have to go through the check-in process at the entrance of CityWalk. You get a special wristband that shows you already had your temperature check and can go directly to the parks.

Click here to read up on the operational guidelines at Universal’s resort hotels.

9. Cool Off This Summer at Volcano Bay

Photo: Universal Orlando Resort

I don’t know about you but I’m craving a relaxing day at the beach, but preferably with minimal crowds of people right next to me. Look no further than Universal’s Volcano Bay. They have the same new and helpful operational guidelines in place at the water theme park. Now, you may be asking yourself, “How do they expect us to wear face masks at Volcano Bay?” Good question, because I had the same one. I discovered you don’t have to wear a mask while you’re in the pools, slides, or eating/drinking. However, they should be worn when not doing these activities. Catch me poolside this summer with a Waturi Fusion ice cream and working on that stylish new trend of face-covering tan lines.

10. New Guidelines Aren’t the Only Things That Are New

The parks may have been closed for a couple of months, but select Team Members have been hard at work creating new experiences for you to come back to. There are new “Love is Universal” and anniversary merchandise to snatch up (have you seen the themed face masks!?); new food and beverage offerings that will be rolled out soon (there’s a new anniversary Voodoo Doughnut!?); and even new entertainment attractions with The Bourne Stuntacular and the new Raptor Encounter (the baby raptor Sierra is the cutest, am I right!?).

11. Here’s What to Bring

With my many years of going to theme parks, I’ve tried to perfect the essentials on what to bring. Now, with our current situation and operational guidelines, I found myself faced with a new challenge: what all to bring along to minimize physical contact but still have everything I need for a comfortable visit. Here are my recommendations:

  • A face covering with a light and breathable fabric. This isn’t just my recommendation, it’s a requirement when visiting the parks, CityWalk, and hotels. Major kudos to those with fun themes and designs. You’ll look awesome as you’re rocking out on Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit (yes, they’re required to be worn on rides, too). The good news is if you forgot your face covering, you can ask a Team Member for a replacement.
  • Your own personal hand sanitizer on a keychain. There are also hand sanitizer stations when you first enter through CityWalk, when you’re about to board a ride, and at restaurant entrances.
  • This has always remained true, but bring water to stay hydrated! You may find yourself being especially thirsty when wearing your face covering, so make sure to bring a water bottle with you.
  • Bring a small bag or carry a lanyard for your belongings. You’re still going to need to put items in lockers for certain attractions that require them. Team Members check the locker queues for social distancing and regularly clean them, but try to only bring the essentials if you want to minimize using them and save time.

6 Iconic Treats at Universal Orlando Resort You Can’t Miss

From the Universal Orlando Resort Blog:

You know that feeling when you’re watching a movie and you start to crave the food the characters are eating…but then you realize it doesn’t actually exist? We’ve all been there. Luckily, at Universal Orlando Resort, some of those foods and drinks DO exist. From snacks and meals to drinks and desserts, here are six iconic treats at Universal Orlando Resort that you just can’t miss!

Spoiler alert: they taste just as good as they look.

Iconic Treats at Universal Studios Florida

Springfield Dining – Universal Studios Florida

Springfield U.S.A.’s dining area brings to life all of the Simpsons eateries you’ve always wanted to try! Personally, my two favorites to visit are Lard Lad Donuts and Moe’s Tavern. A Big Pink donut is a must-have, with a size so large it’s perfect for sharing with a few friends. When it comes to quenching your thirst, I recommend the Flaming Moe. It bubbles and smokes — plus, it’s nonalcoholic so it can be enjoyed by everyone! Also, don’t miss out on the fully-themed Krusty Burger or Duff Brewery.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Universal Studios Florida & Islands of Adventure

butterbeer from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog

One word: Butterbeer. Arguably the most iconic treat from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Butterbeer will make you feel like you’re actually a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You can enjoy this iconic flavor in several different types of treats and the only way to find out your favorite is to try them all…so get to tasting!

There are also plenty of other sweets from the Harry Potter film series to try, including Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans, Peppermint Toads, Fizzing Whizzbees, and Chocolate Frogs (complete with a famous Witch or Wizard Card, of course).

Iconic Treats at Islands of Adventure

Blondie’s – Islands of Adventure

If your appetite is as insatiable as Dagwood’s, you’ll love the iconic sandwich named after him! You can find the Dagwood at Blondie’s in Toon Lagoon — and trust me, it’s as mouthwatering in person as it looks in the comics. Made with fresh-baked onion and poppy seed bread, piled high with baked ham, turkey, roast beef, American and Swiss cheese, and topped with lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, and mustard, one bite is all it takes to see why Dagwood makes so many of these sandwiches.

Green Eggs and Ham Cafe – Islands of Adventure

Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog

Have you been haunted by the question of how green eggs and ham actually taste ever since reading the book? Well, you can finally find out at Green Eggs and Ham Cafe…but with a tot-tastic twist! This Seuss Landing eatery offers green eggs and ham tots, along with a number of other delicious tot varieties. You can even try a can of Who Hash! Just look for the building shaped like a big green ham with a giant fork on top — it’s pretty hard to miss.

Iconic Treats at Universal CityWalk

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. – Universal CityWalk

iconic treats at Universal

Any Forrest Gump fan will want to run to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. right when they enter Universal CityWalk. As Bubba himself puts it, “shrimp is the fruit of the sea,” and there’s plenty of “fruit” to be found here. You can try Cajun shrimp, coconut shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp salad, shrimp scampi, shrimp gumbo… and that’s not all. True fans of the film can even test their knowledge of Forrest Gump factoids right at the table!

Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville – Universal CityWalk

iconic treats at Universal
Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog

Jimmy Buffett’s island vibes are in full force at Margaritaville. Even better, the menu is filled with food and drinks referenced in his songs! Instead of singing “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” why not actually eat one? Or you could grab a Who’s To Blame Margarita to really get in the mood for some tropical relaxation. After all, it’s not “wasting away” if you’re actively consuming calories. That’s just science.

Must be 21 years and older with valid identification to purchase or drink alcoholic beverages.

Is your mouth watering just looking at these photos, too? That means there’s only one thing to do now…book a trip to Universal Orlando Resort right now to satisfy the cravings! 15 Halloween Horror Nights Tips So You Experience It Like a Pro

From the Universal Orlando Resort Blog:

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights will probably be unlike anything you have ever experienced. It’s so fun and terrifying at the same time. Since this limited time event goes so quickly, we hope these 15 Halloween Horror Nights tips will help you make the most of your time in the park.

BEFORE YOU GO…

1. Have a Game Plan

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

There’s a lot to see and do at Halloween Horror Nights, so it helps to plan ahead. What are the haunted houses you really want to experience? Which scare zones must you hit? Which attractions do you want to ride to take a break from the screams? Check out the event map, talk it out with your friends and come up with a list of the must-dos.

2. Make Sure You’re Well Rested

Halloween Horror Nights kicks off at 6:30p on event nights and closes in the wee hours of the morning. You don’t want your fatigue to be the reason you head home early! Take a nice afternoon nap, grab a coffee, or whatever it takes to help you feel rejuvenated for the event.

3. Dress Comfortably (And Check Your Footwear)

I can’t stress this enough. Remember, Halloween Horror Nights is a very intense event, and we all react differently to being scared (some run, some crouch, some freeze and some flail). Make sure you’re dressed appropriately for whatever your coping mechanism may be.

And wear comfortable shoes. The only thing worse than being stalked by a horrifying chainsaw clown is trying to escape them in a pair of shoes you regret wearing.

4. Be Mindful of Your Hair Style

This may seem kind of random, but this ties to tip #3. You’re going to be pretty active during your visit, so make sure you’re rocking a hair style that works for you in the horror environment. Sometimes, I wear my hair away from my face so I can see everything that’s happening (and it keeps me cooler).

5. Try to Carry as Little as Possible

If you can, try to carry only the essentials with you during your visit, like your car keys, wallets, diaper (if you’re really that scared). You won’t want to lug a huge bag around all night. This will also help you move a little quicker through the Security line.

WHILE YOU’RE HERE…

6. Take a Picture of Where You Parked

Because your memory is going to be jam-packed with all of the frights you experienced—and it’s really important to find your car at the end of the night.

7. Visit the Park During the Day

If you visit Universal Studios Florida during the day and have an admission ticket for Halloween Horror Nights that evening, you’ll have a huge advantage over guests who are only attending the event. When the park closes for daytime operation and begins the switchover to Halloween Horror Nights, you’ll actually be held in a designated area in park until the event opens. Then, once it starts, you’ll be released into the event – so you’re already in park while others are just starting to enter the front gate. This will help you get to those haunted houses a little bit quicker.

8. Arrive Early

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

If you choose not to visit the park during the day, I highly recommend you arrive early. Give yourself time to park, go through Security and venture through Universal CityWalk to Universal Studios. You can knock out some of the haunted houses pretty quickly if you’re one of the first inside the event.

9. Go Against the Grain

Halloween Horror Nights is sensory overload and often times, guests stop at the first haunted house or scare zone they see. Don’t be afraid to do the opposite. Once you get into the park, consider going straight to the back and to the furthest house. There’s a good chance that the wait times are going to be shorter.

10. Enjoy the Scare Zones

A lot of people rush through the scare zones – and I get it. You’re being stalked by scareactors and you’re just trying to make it to the other side. But try to find a spot where you can just watch the action in the streets. Sometimes, there are special show moments in the scare zones that you may miss if you just rush through. Plus, it’s SO entertaining to watch other folks get scared.

11. Take Time to Ride the Rides

People come to Halloween Horror Nights for the scares…but make sure you take a moment to experience some of the attractions as well. The wait times are often shorter during the event than they are during the day. Plus, the rides will provide you a nice break from the screams.

12. Keep Your Eyes Peeled

Remember the coping mechanisms mentioned earlier? Well, one we see pretty often is people covering their eyes. If you can, try not to do this. There are a ton of details and easter eggs you’ll miss if you aren’t looking. Trust me – no matter how scared you are, try (your best) to keep your eyes open. Besides, who wouldn’t WANT to get a good look at the scareactors that are preying upon them? Okay, maybe not…

13. Stay Hydrated and Grab Food

You’re going to scream…a lot! And screaming takes a ton of energy. Make sure you drink water (or whatever your beverage of choice is…I won’t judge!) throughout the night to stay hydrated. And grab food—you don’t want to be hangry. You can either grab dinner prior to your visit or take advantage of all of the eateries in the park. To really amp up your night, consider a Scareactor Dining experience.

14. Play a Game While You’re Waiting in the Queues

One way to make time go by a little faster while you’re waiting in a queue is to play a mobile game. Check out the new TERROR TRIVIA game in The Official Universal Orlando Resort App. You can test your knowledge on this year’s haunted houses and all things Halloween Horror Nights.

15. Take Photos

If you didn’t post about it, did it really happen? Make sure to capture the moments and take selfies and photos throughout the event. The visuals help when you’re recounting your experience with your friends. And they make great profile pics. Make sure you tag us with #HHN28!

There you have it, fifteen Halloween Horror Nights tips to get the most out of your Halloween Horror Nights visit. Any tips you would add? Let me know in the comments below.

If you haven’t already, choose an event night now through Nov. 3.

All the Details for Fast & Furious – Supercharged at Universal Studios Florida

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

If you’ve visited recently, you may have seen signs of Fast & Furious – Supercharged at Universal Studios Florida taking shape. We’re working around the clock on putting the finishing touches on our newest attraction, opening next spring.

So now the time has come to go under the hood and share the details for Fast & Furious – Supercharged.

Fast & Furious is all about adrenaline and action-packed thrills. We’re taking all of those awe-inspiring experiences and creating the next chapter in this blockbuster franchise with an all-new theme park ride. We’ll immerse you directly into the storyline alongside your favorite characters and make you a part of the Fast family forever.

There are four specific details exclusive to Universal Orlando’s Fast & Furious – Supercharged that make it the ultimate Fast & Furious experience:

  • Supercharged Cars
  • New Characters
  • New Story
  • Virtual Line

Buckle up and hang on tight as I give you a front-row look inside this high-energy adventure with the Fast family.

The Family’s All Here

You’ll encounter Dom (Vin Diesel), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and more of your favorite Fast & Furious characters during your action-packed experience. But it’s not all good guys that you’ll come face-to-face with either. Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) and his criminal cartel are back with a vengeance.

And for the first time ever, Ludacris (Tej Parker) and Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto) will join the all-star cast of this attraction.

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

Cars from the Fast & Furious Film Franchise

We’ve worked closely with Dennis McCarthy, the man behind the insane cars for the Fast & Furious films, to craft 15 authentic cars for our attraction.

Fast & Furious – Supercharged is the only place you’ll find these vehicles, including Dom’s iconic Dodge Charger, Letty’s Turbo Truck and more.

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

An Original Fast & Furious Story

Before you even step inside the attraction, you’re immersed in the story. You’ll first encounter Dom’s iconic car parked outside.

The Fast & Furious – Supercharged building has become the all-new home base of operations. You’ll get to explore familiar scenes inspired by the films, including Tej’s high-tech War Room and the Family Room—complete with photos of the Fast family.

Dom invites you to attend a race after-party that you won’t want to miss. The best part is Tej hooks you up with customized party busses to get you there.

As you make your way to the party, Dom calls with an urgent message: Criminal mastermind Owen Shaw has tracked you down. Now, a high-speed chase is on as the Fast & Furious crew strives to keep you safe from the clutches of Shaw. But will you make it?

Virtual Line

Fast & Furious – Supercharged is the next attraction at Universal Orlando Resort to feature the Virtual Line system. All you need to do is download the free Official Universal Orlando Resort Mobile App, or locate the kiosks near the ride entrance, and select your ride time. While you wait, you can check out the other attractions at Universal Studios.

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

And that’s not all.

Throughout the attraction, you’ll hear hit songs from the Fast & Furious soundtracks. Your favorite film clips will play on screens throughout the queue. There will be photo opportunities with cars from this year’s blockbuster The Fate of the Furious after you exit the ride. And you won’t want to miss gearing up with “Family Forever” merchandise in the gift shop.

Mark your calendars for next spring and stay tuned here for more details as we take you inside Fast & Furious – Supercharged.

Along with Universal’s Superstar Parade, you can now be entertained while you’re on your stroll through Universal Studios Florida with new performances and live entertainment at Universal Studios Florida bringing the streets to life!

From throwing it back to the silver screen with Marilyn & the Diamond Bellas to rockin’ with the Beat Builders, there is incredible entertainment for every Tom, Dick, and Harry.

singit

My personal favorite is the aca-awesome Sing It! Here, dynamic vocalists compete in a “riff-off”—and enlist your help—in a battle for acapella supremacy. This treat for the ears features hits from summer chart-toppers such as, “Can’t Stop The Feeling” to classics like, “Don’t Stop Believin’”.

marilyn

Also in New York, share the silver screen with Hollywood’s Bombshell as Marilyn & the Diamond Bellas perform her classic songs with a Star-Spangled Flair.

beatbuilders

Just on the edge of New York City streets before heading to San Francisco, you’ll find the Beat Builders. This lively percussion group incorporates the materials and equipment from a construction site to create jams that echo through the streets.

flyingfish

And last, but certainly not least, is the high flying, fish tossing, Flying Fish Market. Located in San Francisco, you can stop by for the Halibut and stay for the acrobatic awesomeness.

Check your Park Map on your next visit for show times to enjoy a performance in the streets.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre at Halloween Horror Nights 26

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre at Halloween Horror Nights 26

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre at Halloween Horror Nights 26 will be an all new haunted maze in 2016. The entire creative team of Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights has a library of films that have permanently etched their initials in our collective psyche. Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is certainly one of those films and this year, we’re bringing the original 1974 classic to life in an all-new haunted maze.

It’s a film that if made identically today, it wouldn’t compare to the original. Yes, today’s version would be gorier and with artistic camera moves and edits. But the 1974 original’s grit and journalistic style is what makes it so terrifying; it’s what makes it feel so real.

And I’d be willing to bet this film is the reason a chainsaw’s iconic roar is frightening to so many people.

The film features very little gore, instead focusing on the psychological nature of this warped family. I’ll never forget watching it over at my buddy’s house in middle school. Sally’s ordeal of being captured by this maniacal family is never more pungent than when the family’s near-dead, corpse-like grandfather is attempting to limply bash Sally in head. The family’s sheer joy at this sickening display was indelible.

But nothing can equate to the late, great Gunnar Hansen’s portrayal of the killer, Leatherface. You can see the maniac but also the layers of innocence deep down, that this chainsaw-wielding murderer is a product of his upbringing. Leatherface is a feral character with hints of sadness and humanity. Gunnar brought this to the role and no one has yet to duplicate his performance.

As creators of Halloween Horror Nights, we have the privilege of bringing to life many popular horror films. Every now and then, we are able to replicate one that forged the reason horror has become such a factor in many of our lives. The original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is undoubtedly on that short list.

Like all of you, the horror fan in me is looking forward to reliving this story and entering that dilapidated Texas farmhouse. The anticipation of coming face-to-face with a horror legend and having my screams drowned by that saw blade is just as prevalent now as when I first witnessed this amazing horror film decades ago.

Experience The Exorcist at Halloween Horror Nights 26

Experience The Exorcist at Halloween Horror Nights 26

Haunting. Shocking. Indelible.

These are words that describe my feelings when I first saw The Exorcist.

The film is a benchmark in so many ways. It was the first horror film to be nominated for Best Picture. It helped lead the charge in a sequence of “demonic child” storylines. And it has often been replicated in many horror films today, irrefutably placing it among the kings of influential horror pop culture.

And now that influence has found its way to Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights in an all-new haunted maze. As with any horror property we collaborate with, our job is to create an attraction that adapts that property into a fully realized experience. That adaptation is a creative challenge in every case.

But translating The Exorcist presented us with many unique tests and questions. One big question was, “How do you adapt a film where most of the story takes place in a single bedroom?”

The answer we landed on was first to break down and assess all the visuals and moments from the film. Piece together every moment within that bedroom and examine why it was intense, scary or even vile. What textures can we reconstruct differently, sometimes in an incredibly abstract way?

The famous “pea soup” scene for instance. What if we were surrounded in the materials of the retch-covered bed? What if those layers of mattress padding literallyenveloped us? And let’s be honest, traversing through a vomit-covered bed is pretty horrifying and disgusting by itself. Now add a possessed girl into the mix!

Just like this amazing film, the maze needs to overcome you—even possess you (wink)—with its visuals, characters and environments. It needs to force you on its horrific quest for this young girl’s very soul and spit you out the other side. That is our goal and we are beside ourselves with excitement at the opportunity to do so this year.

Getting pumped for this year’s Halloween Horror Nights? We are too! Halloween Horror Nights vacation packages are now available and selling out quickly!
