Learn More About the Disneyland Railroad at Disneyland Park

From the Disney Parks Blog:

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

All aboard! In honor of Disneyland celebrating 63 years, we will be departing on a grand circle tour to explore the Disneyland Railroad. As an opening day attraction and one of Walt Disney’s personal favorites, this iconic experience is full of rich historical details and beautiful sights. Let’s take a closer look!

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

As guests first enter Disneyland park for the day, their first sight is the elegant, Victorian-style Main Street Station. The station is framed with a centered sign including both the elevation of 138 feet above sea level and the population of Disneyland, which is updated periodically to reflect the number of guests who have visited the park since it opened in 1955. Also, in front of the station is the Kalamazoo handcar, which sits on the former passing track. A fixture in the park since 1958, the handcar was a unique addition to Walt’s collection!

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

Stepping into Main Street Station, guests are treated to period details, railroad memorabilia and photos demonstrating Walt’s love of railroads. In the center of the depot, you can view a reproduction of Walt’s original Carolwood Pacific locomotive, the Lilly Belle. The original 1/8-scale “live steamer” was named for his wife, Lillian Disney, and was the main engine for the half-mile track around his family’s home in Holmby Hills.

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

When boarding your train, be sure to keep an eye out for which engine will be taking you on your journey. Each of the five steam engines on this historic line has its own personality and story—some which date back to 1895! My personal favorite is Engine No. 5 – the Ward Kimball. This train is unique in that it was named not only for a railroad icon, but also for an icon of The Walt Disney Company. Disney Legend Ward Kimball was an animator, one of Walt Disney’s “Nine Old Men,” and a railroad enthusiast, whose passion for the hobby helped inspire Walt’s own love of trains and railroading. If you look hard, you may see the silhouette of a familiar cricket painted somewhere near the front of the engine, displayed in homage to one of his most beloved characters!

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

After leaving Main Street Station, the first stop on the Disneyland Railroad is New Orleans Square/Frontierland Station. The station features a number of buildings, including a functional water tower and a loading platform. Across the tracks from the loading station is the original Frontierland depot that existed before New Orleans Square was built. The inspiration for the original Frontierland station was the wooden depot featured in the 1949 Disney live action film, “So Dear To My Heart.” Walt Disney initially wanted to re-use the actual set piece that had been built for the film, but when he learned that his friend and fellow animator Ward Kimball had already modified it into a fully functioning building for his personal Grizzly Flats Railroad—thus making it difficult to move—Walt asked his designers to build a new one just like it.

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

Continuing along the Rivers of America, guests can take in the landscapes inspired by four of America’s majestic rivers—the Mississippi, the Columbia, the Missouri and the Rio Grande. The trains travel across the rocks on a trestle that extends out over the water, passing waterfalls, wildlife and some familiar sights of the old west. If you keep an eye out, you may even be able to see some familiar logos from a ranch that once was located around these parts.

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

If you’ve ever thought Mickey’s Toontown Train Depot looks familiar, there’s a reason! The station is a cartoon version inspired by the original Frontierland Station. It has the same basic design with a similar roof style and a small fenced-in section for luggage and other freight. The luggage area is especially fun and colorful with humorous suitcases and crates, including one suitcase with a sock hanging out of the top and another with dog bones popping out of the sides.

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

Before returning to Main Street Station, the Disneyland Railroad makes one more stop in Tomorrowland to drop off guests in the future before heading back into the past! As you pass through the 306-foot-long Grand Canyon Diorama, be sure to keep an eye out for landscaping, ancient ruins and various examples of indigenous wildlife. As the trains move past the Grand Canyon Diorama, they make their way to another diorama, this one taking guests to the mysterious Primeval World. The Primeval World Diorama and Audio-Animatronics dinosaurs were originally designed and built by Disney for the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair and were added in 1966 to enhance the Disneyland Railroad experience.

Top 5 Things to Do at Volcano Bay If You Don’t Like Waterslides and Rides

When Universal Orlando Resort opened Volcano Bay last year, it became the first water theme park of its kind. With the TapuTapu wearable, guests can reserve their return time for a slide with a simple tap and then lounge on the beach while they wait. This park offers so much and is definitely worthwhile for families of all ages and interests. Here are the top five things to do at Volcano Bay if you don’t like waterslides.

Relaxing

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

It’s tough to stop and relax with the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Taking the time to recharge is good for your over-all health. Volcano Bay offers many ways to relax and forget about reality.

Start by taking a trip down the Kopiko Wai Winding River. Flowing down this peaceful river on a giant inner tube really helps take stress away.  Just keep an eye out for those water launchers!

Volcano Bay also provides a tranquil surrounding for sunbathing. The Florida sun is ever-so-friendly in this beautiful oasis. Finding the perfect spot along Waturi Beach and watching the waterfall on the Krakatau volcano, while soaking in the sun, makes for the best relaxation.

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

You can also up your relaxation game with a Private Cabana rental. These cabanas can hold up to 16 people and offer a comfortable way to enjoy time with friends and family.

There is also the option to add on Premium Seating. This includes a pair of padded loungers, canopy, and even storage for belongings. Not to mention, you can relax even more knowing an area attendant will be taking care of your food and drink orders.

Delicious Bites

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

Spending all day in this paradise is only made better with their food choices. There are plenty of delicious options to enjoy ! You have options like tacos from The Feasting Frog, “longboard” pizzas and tons of burger options.

Cooling off is made easy, not only with the beautiful beaches, but also with ice cream flavors exclusive to Volcano Bay. The Waturi Fusion is a must during your day at Volcano Bay.

Refreshing Drinks

One of the reasons many adult guests are so excited about their visit is taking the time to enjoy the specialty drinks.

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

The Volcano Blossom craft beer has been described as tasting “like a tropical island.” The Volcano Bay Rum Punch is another popular choice out of the many cocktails.

There are also plenty of non-alcoholic drinks available too. One of the best is the tropical POG, made up of a delicious blend passion fruit, orange and guava juices.

Friendly reminder! You must be 21 years or older to consume alcohol and be able to present a valid driver’s license.

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

Volcano Bay also offers an incredible deal with their refillable mug. Not only is this mug the perfect souvenir to take home, it can also be refilled all day with thanks to the Coca-Cola Freestyle machines found throughout the park.

Exploring

There is so much to explore at Volcano Bay. Between the beautiful beach, the landscape, and even the Volcano itself, there really is so much to see.

Having no shortage of beautiful views, Volcano Bay is filled with potential Instagram photos. Take aesthetic photos and get those likes!

There are many ways to unleash the power of the TapuTapu. Use your TapuTapu to light up the walls inside the Volcano to reveal beautiful pictures.

The TapuTapu can even launch water to those relaxing in the two rivers. Be on the lookout for ways to unleash the TapuTapu throughout Volcano Bay.

Shopping

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

The time you spend at Volcano Bay is something you will want to remember and tell others about.

Look for the Details and Story Behind Disneyland’s Matterhorn Bobsleds

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

One of the classic attractions at Disneyland park is the Matterhorn Bobsleds. Let’s take a look closer at this classic attraction!

The idea for the Matterhorn Bobsleds was inspired during the filming of the 1959 live action Disney feature film, “Third Man on the Mountain.” During filming in Zermatt, Switzerland, Walt Disney became fascinated with the Matterhorn and his thoughts turned to how he could incorporate this inspiration at Disneyland.

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

When you first approach the attraction, you may notice the unique station where you wait to board the bobsleds. While the attraction was being designed and built, Walt and his Imagineers wanted guests to be able to enjoy the view of the Matterhorn, similar to how one might view it from its home town of Zermatt. Rising from the roofline is a picturesque tower, inspired by a famous clock tower near the real Matterhorn mountain. The clock tower is probably the second most famous sight in Zermatt, following the Matterhorn itself, and recreates a familiar scene of Switzerland’s famed chalets.

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

Adorning the front of this quaint building are shields representing the cantons, or states, in Switzerland. The opposite side is adorned with fanciful alpine-style floral cutouts edged in brightly colored paints. The design recalls the colors and motifs found both in traditional Swiss embroidery designs as well as the decorative painted patterns found on some mountain chalets.
