Enjoy a Very Merrytime Cruise, Disney Cruise Line’s Holiday Cruise

2014 holiday cruises

This holiday season, you can give a gift that’s both “nautical and nice:” a cruise on the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy, all of which will be decked with holiday cheer. Beginning in late November, Disney Cruise Line will add sparkle to all four ships during Very Merrytime Cruises, complete with traditional “turkey day” fanfare, Christmas feasts, “snow flurries,” and even New Year’s Eve galas. However, the very best part just might be relaxing in the sunshine instead of shoveling snow!

With Disney Cruise Line’s Very Merrytime cruises, there will be special stem-to-stern holiday events including:

  • “King Triton’s Tree Lighting Ceremony” in the atrium lobby on the first night of the cruise, where a young guest will help Disney characters light the glittering, three-deck-tall tree.
  • Family holiday activities including building gingerbread houses and meeting Santa Claus.
  • Youth holiday crafts such as decorating stockings and gingerbread men cookies, making holiday cards and creating holiday animation cells.
  • Holiday storytellers sharing tales of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, plus a story just for Disney Cruise Line guests about the magical feeling of the holidays on a ship.
  • “Deck the Deck Holiday Party,” a tropical celebration with Disney friends leading games such as hula hooping and limbo under oversized candy canes, along with dances for the whole family like the “Yuletide Slide” and a conga line around the pool.
  • “Til We Meet Again” features a special holiday edition of Disney Cruise Line’s cheerful farewell on the final night of each cruise with beloved Disney characters and the ship’s crew in an engaging musical finale led by Mickey Mouse.

If you will be onboard on Thanksgiving Day, you can enjoy a plentiful Thanksgiving Day feast, visits from Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse dressed in traditional Thanksgiving attire, and a special turkey towel animal in your stateroom. You won’t even miss the big NFL football games since they will be broadcast live on the ships’ outdoor, jumbo LED screen—Funnel Vision—located near the family pool.

Santa Claus and his elves will have a surprise for all the kids on Christmas morning at the atrium lobby tree. Guests will also enjoy caroling from the crew choir and a special musical performance from the children. A traditional Christmas Dinner will then be served that evening in the dining rooms.

You can still participate in religious services while onboard, too. Christmas services will be held on Christmas Day with a midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Hanukkah services will be held each day, December 16 to December 24.

When each ship stops at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, during the holidays, the celebration will continue with “snow flurries,” a decked-out Christmas tree, Disney character meet-and-greets, and even holiday island music.

If you would like to add an extra sprinkle of holiday joy, mini Christmas trees decorated with ornaments, red berries, mini carnations and a bow topper, as well as special holiday-themed gift packages and treat baskets, are available for purchase prior to the voyages for stateroom delivery. Plus, during the holiday cruises, Disney Cruise Line’s holiday merchandise collection, along with the ever-popular Disney Cruise Line ornaments, will be available onboard in the gift shops.

If you would like ring in 2015 in style, Disney Cruise Line voyages will include a special New Year’s Eve party, featuring music, sparkling wine in commemorative flutes, and a midnight countdown.

You can celebrate the holidays with Disney Cruise Line on the following sailings:

  • Disney Magic: seven-night Western Caribbean cruises departing November 23 to December 28
  • Disney Wonder: four- and five-night Bahamian and Caribbean cruises departing November 23 to December 30
  • Disney Dream: three- and four-night Bahamian cruises departing November 24 to December 29

Unique Port Excursions Planned for Disney Cruise Line Sailings to Alaska

 alaska dcl

Disney has a wide variety of exciting and exclusive port adventures planned to allow Disney Cruise Line guests to explore the grandeur of Alaska in 2014.

Disney Cruise Line has created unique family-friendly excursions that will both entertain and inspire every member of the family while taking in Alaska’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.

Disney Cruise Line Guests can enjoy a hassle-free and fun-filled way to experience Alaska’s breathtaking views, native wildlife and the history and customs of native cultures. After each adventures ashore, guests returns to the comfort and amenities of the Disney Wonder.

Every port offers excursions for the whole family to enjoy together, but many tours also integrate separate activities for children and adults. This allows the kids to be engaged in age-appropriate activities while supervised by youth counselors from the ship so parents can explore and relax on their own.

Most ports of call also include at least one excursion that features distinctly Disney touches, beloved characters and rich storytelling to help bring local culture and customs to life. Guests can also enjoy Signature Collection tours that range from deluxe experiences in intimate, upscale settings to customized tours that have been enhanced with experiences exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests.

The Disney Difference

In Skagway, guests board motor coaches for a tour through the city’s historic downtown area before arriving at the Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp, which is nestled beside a waterfall at the foot of White Pass. At the camp, a cast of sourdoughs and dance hall girls entertain guests with a hilarious puppet show inspired by the heady days of the Klondike gold rush and the tall tales told by prospectors who traveled to and from the treacherous pass.

After the show, a fun scavenger hunt through the camp sets the stage for a gold-panning expedition joined by some beloved Disney characters, with everyone guaranteed to find the precious metal in every pan. Next, guests gather around the campfire to roast marshmallows and pose for photos with the Disney characters, followed by an all-you-can-eat outdoor feast in the forest featuring wild Alaskan salmon freshly grilled over an alder wood fire.

A Juneau adventure exclusive to Disney Cruise Line, Glacier Dog Musher for a Day, takes guests by helicopter over the massive Juneau Icefield to one of the region’s awe-inspiring glaciers where they’ll meet the crew and the sled dogs of the Iditarod. During the interactive experience, guests tour the camp and explore behind-the-scenes areas including the kennel, cookhouse, living quarters and veterinary clinic before preparing a dog team for a day of mushing. Once the furry friends are fed, harnessed and cleared for the trail, mushers take guests out on the snow-capped glacier for an unforgettable sled trip through the pristine wilderness.

During an exclusive Ketchikan adventure, guests learn about the flora and fauna of southeast Alaska while exploring Potlatch Park, a re-created native settlement that features a tribal house and salmon smoke shack. Youth counselors from the ship accompany children as they learn the art of totem carving from a native carver and paint a wooden feather to be added to a special totem pole designed exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests that stands in the park.

Into the Wilderness

In Skagway, guests board a vintage railroad car for a narrated trip up the White Pass and Yukon Route, which climbs nearly 3,000 feet to the summit of White Pass over 20 miles of steep grades and cliff-hanging turns. Along the way, a tour guide retraces the original route as the rail car passes Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point and Dead Horse Gulch, and guests catch a glimpse of the original Klondike Trail worn into the rocks by eager prospectors more than a century ago. During the return trip down the mountain, children can ride in a private, kids-only car featuring sing-alongs, games, activities and stories of the gold rush. They are joined by a Railroader Guide and youth counselors from the Disney Wonder. Meanwhile, adults enjoy a toast of champagne or cider and receive a unique ornament to welcome them into the White Pass Summit Club.

From Juneau, teens are accompanied by Disney Cruise Line youth counselors as they suit up for an exclusive Helicopter Glacier Trek excursion just for teens. The 20-minute flight features breathtaking views of the Juneau Icefield and surrounding wilderness. After touching down on the glacier, experienced guides instruct teens on the proper use of mountaineering gear before setting off on an adventuresome two-hour trek over rugged terrain filled with thrilling views and abundant opportunities for spectacular photos.

At an authentic Alaskan fish camp in Ketchikan, guests don fishing gear and board open-air, 20-foot skiffs for an intimate angling experience led by a professional guide. During the derby-style competition, guests drop a line in pursuit of rockfish, snapper, Pacific cod, halibut and salmon while keeping an eye out to spot seals, eagles, whales, birds, porpoises and even bears. After fishing, guests head to a cozy wilderness campsite and feast on a meal featuring the day’s catch, while guides award prizes for fun derby categories such as first fish, longest fish and even ugliest fish.

On the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour in Ketchikan, guests look on as professional fishermen haul in the catch of the day in 700-pound king crab pots. An on-deck aquarium becomes the crabs’ temporary home providing an up-close look and a chance to hold the crabs and snap a photo. After a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship, including a photo in the captain’s chair, Disney Cruise Line guests have an exclusive opportunity to enjoy a delicious dinner of fresh King crab and Dungeness crab with the crew while hearing more stories about life on the Bering Sea.

Heritage and History

In Juneau, guests board floatplanes for a 30-minute aerial voyage that includes breathtaking views of several glaciers before arriving at Taku Glacier Lodge, a remote outpost built in 1923 directly across from the picturesque Hole-In-The-Wall Glacier in the untouched Tongass National Forest. While at the rustic glacier lodge, guests enjoy a meal of wild Alaska king salmon while listening to tales of the lodge’s colorful past and stories of characters such as Mary Joyce, a legendary adventurer who made a 1,000-mile dogsled journey from Juneau to Fairbanks in the 1930s. The experience concludes with a return flight to Juneau, past snow-capped mountains, cascading waterfalls, lush forests and deep blue crevasses of the Juneau Icefield.

In Ketchikan, Disney Cruise Line guests can explore the rich culture of Annette Island, home to the only native reservation in Alaska. A signature Port Adventure gives guests a rare glimpse into a working village as they are immersed in the heritage of the Tsimshian people. Guests learn about the lives and language of the culture through song and dance, create their very own drums and learn a few words of the native language, Smalgyax. Guests are then invited to dance and drum with the native dancers in the cultural traditions.

Several Ketchikan excursions include a visit to the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, a rollicking competition created especially for families that features some of the world’s top timber sport athletes going head-to-head for bragging rights and the title “Bull of the Woods.” Offering a historical look at the timber industry that helped shape Alaska, the one-hour show includes events such as chopping, sawing, log rolling, death-defying speed climbing and more, plus opportunities for a few Disney Cruise Line children to participate alongside the burly competitors in select events. After clapping and cheering for their teams, families can meet the lumberjacks for autographs and photos at the end of each rowdy show.

Wildlife Adventures

With a Disney cruise to Alaska, guests are immersed in the pristine wilderness and splendor of Alaska. The breathtaking, untouched terrain is a nature-lover’s paradise that offers unrivaled opportunities to admire the area’s incredible wildlife.

A variety of port excursions include the chance for guests to view awe-inspiring wildlife such as magnificent humpback whales in Juneau, high-flying bald eagles in Skagway, majestic black bears in Ketchikan and playful sea otters in Sitka.

The Disney Wonder will begin its Alaska season on May 24, 2014. The 2014 Alaska season will begin with a special nine-night cruise from Vancouver to Tracy Arm, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka, Alaska. Then, starting June 2, the Disney Wonder will sail a total of 14 seven-night cruises from Vancouver to Tracy Arm, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, Alaska.

Top Ten Tips for Enjoying a Day at Castaway Cay

castaway cay 9

Most Disney Cruise Line sailings include a stop at Disney’s private island paradise, Castaway Cay. If you are planning or thinking about planning a Disney Cruise, you may be wondering how to get the most out of your day at Castaway Cay. Here are the top ten tips for enjoying a day at Castaway Cay:

    1. Reserve the Castaway Cay Getaway Package, including snorkel equipment, a float and a bicycle, online or onboard prior to arrival at Castaway Cay. This discounted package is not available once you’re on the island.
    2. Leave your towels and strollers on the ship. Beach towels and beach-ready strollers and wagons are available for complimentary use on Castaway Cay.
    3. Wear plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for protection from the strong Bahamian rays. And if you forget these or any other beach essentials, pick them up at “Buy the Sea Shore” on the island.
    4. Check out the island’s character meet-and-greet schedule in your Personal Navigator. You won’t want to miss any of these picture-perfect photo ops!
    5. Bring cash to send mail from the Bahamian post office. At all Disney-run merchandise and beverage locations, you can charge directly to your stateroom account using your Key to the World card.
    6. Eat lunch on the island. A delicious all-you-care-to-eat lunch buffet is served (at no additional cost!) in three locations on Castaway Cay, so you can enjoy more time there without getting back on the ship for mealtime.
    7. Sneak away for some adult-only time, like a couple’s massage or relaxing in a hammock or lounge chair at Serenity Bay, while the kids hang out with the youth counselors. Your little ones will have a blast at Scuttle’s Cove and your older ones will love snorkeling, biking and kayaking on the teen-exclusive Wild Side adventure.
    8. Take a break from the sun under one of the many covered spaces. Relax at a shaded eating area, or hit up In Da Shade Game Pavilion to play games such as table tennis, foosball, billiards and basketball.
    9. Explore offshore with exciting, water-based Port Adventures. Parasailing, watercraft skiing, bottom fishing, a glass bottom boat ride or a narrated island cruise are all great ways to see the island from different vantage points.
    10. Get your exclusive Castaway Cay merchandise and gifts at “She Sells Sea Shells…and Everything Else”—and have Disney cruise staff deliver your purchases to the ship. You can only get Castaway Cay souvenirs on the island!

Celebrate Halloween on the High Seas with Disney Cruise Line

halloween dcl

Do you want to plan something special and fun for your family this Halloween? Your family is sure to love a Disney cruise this fall! Disney Cruise Line will treat guests sailing this fall to a spook-tacular good time. All four of the Disney ships will be transformed into a ghoulish wonderland complete with frightfully fun events and activities, elaborate decor, unique menu offerings in the restaurants, and even themed parties on deck.

Halloween on the High Seas will take place aboard all four Disney Cruise Line ships from late September through October 2014. This unique celebration will feature Halloween-themed parties, lively entertainment, and special decorations, including The Pumpkin Tree, which magically transforms throughout the cruise. Other exciting experiences planned for the cruises include:

  • Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party, a celebration held in addition to Pirate Night featuring games, dancing, and plenty of candy! Some of your favorite Disney characters, donning special Halloween costumes just for the event, will join guests for this fun-filled costume party.
  • A Nightmare Before Christmas—Sing and Scream, an interactive movie experience where guests have the opportunity to be part of the action and then enjoy a meet-and-greet with Jack Skellington and Sally.
  • Haunted Stories of the Sea, where only the bravest cruisers will gather under the stars to hear some true (or not so true) tales of the sea told by a mysterious sea captain storyteller.
  • Creepy Cabaret, a party in the atrium with Halloween-themed music performed live by a band of ghostly musicians.
  • Halloween Isn’t Just For Kids: For adults, the nighttime entertainment district will become the ghoulish setting for a costume contest as well as a Villainous Takeover on the dance floor.
  • Spooky Movies: To help get guests into the spirit of the season, Halloween-themed movies will be shown in Buena Vista Theatre, on Funnel Vision by the family pool, and in guest staterooms.
  • Ghoulish Delights: Disney Cruise Line chefs have created some very special (and delicious) treats for Halloween, including chocolate cake with pumpkin filling, spider cakes, and “Spooky Juice.”
  • More spooky fun includes mask-making and a ghostly takeover of the ship announcements!

You can celebrate Halloween on the High Seas during the following Disney Cruise Line sailings:
