12 Easy Ways to Save Money on Your Disney World Vacation

A Disney World vacation can add up quickly for families between the expenses of a hotel stay, theme park tickets, dining, souvenirs, transportation, and more. There are some easy ways that you can cut your costs and still have a magical vacation!

Here are twelve easy ways you can save money on your Disney World vacation:

  1. Skip the park hopper option: If you are concerned about your budget, one of the easiest things to trim is the park hopper option. On a multi-day park ticket, this can save you more than $80 per person which quickly adds up for families!
  2. Stay at a value resort: There are five value resorts at Disney World- Disney’s All Star Sports Resort, Disney’s All Star Music Resort, Disney’s All Star Movies Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. These hotels typically start around $100 per night and still include all of the perks and amenities of staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel. So, you can take advantage of complimentary magic bands, complimentary transportation to the parks, complimentary airport transfers, and more!
  3. Take advantage of discounts: Disney offers various room and package discounts throughout the year. There are rarely times that there isn’t a special offer available so be sure to take advantage of these to save as much as possible on your vacation.
  4. Travel in the off season: Disney tends to offer the lowest rates in January and September. These times coincide with the lowest crowds so it makes for a great experience all the way around!
  5. Disney gift cards: Did you know that you can use Disney gift cards to pay for any or all of your Disney vacation? It’s true! You can purchase Disney gift cards at a number of retailers and earn cash back on your credit cards or take advantage of discounted prices at wholesalers like Sam’s Club or by saving 5% with a Target red card.
  6. Table service breakfast: If you aren’t purchasing a dining plan, breakfast will be the least expensive meal to purchase. This is especially important if you are planning character dining as you can easily save over $10 per person, just by choosing breakfast over dinner!
  7. Pack breakfast and snacks: Breakfast is a pretty easy meal to pack in a suitcase to bring with you. There are so many choices like cereal, breakfast bars, and even mini doughnuts that can travel well and save a lot rather than having to buy that meal out of pocket. You can also pack snacks to minimize those dining costs in the parks.
  8. Spend a day at Disney Springs: You can skip a day of the parks for some of the wonderful activities available outside of the theme parks at the Walt Disney World Resort! You could spend a day exploring Disney Springs, try horseback riding at Fort Wilderness, swim at your resort’s pool, stroll the Boardwalk, and more, all without having to purchase park admission.
  9. Get free ice water and/or Bring a refillable bottle: You can get a free cup of ice water at any quick service dining location in all four theme parks. These are readily available and often waiting on a tray behind the counter. If you don’t love the taste of Florida water (few do), bring a water bottle from home that you can refill in the parks and add your own flavor packet to it!
  10. Bring souvenirs or stop by Character Warehouse: If you can pick up souvenirs from home, whether you go to your local Disney Store, order from ShopDisney.com or even check out the Dollar Tree (or Target Dollar Spot), you can save so much on souvenirs. If you’re looking for authentic park souvenirs, be sure to take the time to visit Character Warehouse at the outlets in Orlando to get discounted merchandise from the Walt Disney World Resort theme parks and hotels (and often Disney Cruise Line)!
  11. Bring Your Stroller: Stroller rentals can really add up. If you rent in the parks, single strollers are $15 daily or double strollers are $31 daily. Even length of stay rentals from approved companies can come close to $100 so if at all possible, bring your own stroller with you. Chances are, your kids will be more comfortable in their own stroller, too!
  12. Skip Memory Maker: Memory Maker is available for the discounted rate of $169 when purchased at least 3 days in advance while the cost in the parks is $199. The Disney PhotoPass photographers are happy to take the same pictures on your camera or phone as they do on theirs. The only thing you really would miss are the magic shots and attraction photos.

13 Things to Do at Disney World Without a Park Ticket

The highlight of any Walt Disney World Resort vacation is always the four spectacular theme parks, but there is so much more to see and do outside of the theme parks. Whether you have some extra time on a travel day or are taking a break from the parks to rest during your vacation, there are lots of things to keep you busy at Disney World without a park ticket.

Here are 13 things to do at Disney World without a park ticket:

  1. Disney Springs: Disney Springs (formerly known as Downtown Disney) is one of the most popular things to do at Disney World that doesn’t require theme park admission. It offers shopping, restaurants, bowling, a movie theater, food truck park, and so much more.
  2. Disney’s Boardwalk: Disney’s Boardwalk offers restaurants, a bakery, pizza window, shops, old fashioned carnival games, surrey bikes, and more. ESPN Club is a great place to catch a game or the whole family can enjoy a leisurely ride along Crescent Lake, if you rent a surrey bike.
  3. Tri-Circle-D Ranch at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground: Did you know that you can go horseback riding at Disney World? You can! There are both pony rides for little ones and trail rides for those who may just be young at heart. You can also visit Cinderella’s Ponies or enjoy a carriage ride around the property.
  4. Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground: You can roast marshmallows and sing campfire songs with everyone’s favorite chipmunks most evenings at Fort Wilderness. You are welcome to bring your own s’mores supplies or they are available for purchase, too. Don’t forget your camera and autograph book for this unique experience.
  5. Watch Fireworks from a Resort: You can see Magic Kingdom’s nighttime spectacular, Happily Ever After, from any of the monorail resorts. You are welcome to visit these resorts, even if you are not staying there. You can make a dining reservation to coincide with a view from select restaurants or head out by the water to enjoy the view. You can also see Epcot’s IllumiNations from Disney’s Boardwalk and Disney’s Beach Club Resorts.
  6. Beaches and Cream: Treat yourself to some delicious ice cream at Beaches and Cream at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. You can choose to dine in the restaurant (reservations recommended) with the exclusive Kitchen Sink or order at the to-go counter and eat at one of the outdoor tables.
  7. Electrical Water Pageant: This parade of floating lights has sailed across the Seven Seas Lagoon since Magic Kingdom Park first opened in 1971. You can view the Electrical Water Pageant from Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, or even outside of Magic Kingdom Park.
  8. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge: Animal Kingdom Lodge is quite an incredible resort. You can view some of your favorite animals on the savanna from the resort like giraffe, cattle, and zebra. There are also unique activities available including cultinary tours, face painting, cookie decorating, and more. My friend Leah has a great review here.
  9. Ride the monorail: There are three different monorail routes at Disney World which cover over 14 miles. You can ride the resort monorail between the Transportation and Ticket Center, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Magic Kingdom Park, and Disney’s Contemporary Resort. There are some wonderful shopping and dining locations along this route.
  10. Disney’s Art of Animation Resort: Art of Animation has some of the best theming of any resort. You can enjoy free drawing classes here or take time to explore the four sections of the resort with large statues featuring characters from “Finding Nemo,” “Cars,” “The Lion King,” and “The Little Mermaid.”
  11. Movie Under the Stars: A great way to end you day at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel is with a movie under the stars. All Disney hotels offer this free activity, either by the pool or elsewhere on their grounds. The schedule changes monthly so be sure to check with the front desk or the recreation sign by the pool for the current movie showing during your vacation.
  12. Miniature Golf: Disney World has two miniature golf courses on property- Fantasia Gardens and Winter Summerland. You can find Fantasia Gardens at the Walt Disney World Swan Hotel while Winter Summerland is at Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park. The cost is $14 for ages 10+ or $12 for children ages 3-9.
  13. Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort- Riverside: You can enjoy a 25 minute horse-drawn carriage ride from Disney’s Port Orleans Resort- Riverside for $55 plus tax. Each carriage can accommodate up to four adults or two adults and three children. Advance reservations are recommended and available up to 180 days in advance.

Top 5 Things to Know About Memory Maker at Disney World

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

When planning your Walt Disney World Resort vacation, you’re probably focused on selecting your accommodations, adding your park tickets, and then determining which experiences you absolutely have to fit in during your visit. But one other important aspect of your vacation you’ll want to consider before arriving is how you’ll capture and preserve the memories you’ll make at Walt Disney World Resort. For many, Memory Maker is a great option. There are usually a lot of questions about Memory Maker and how it works so here are the top five things you’ll need to know about Memory Maker so you can decide if you need it during your Disney World vacation.

How is Memory Maker related to Disney PhotoPass Service?
Disney PhotoPass Service has photographers stationed throughout Walt Disney World Resort ready to get your entire family in the photo and cameras ready to capture your experience at select attractions.

Memory Maker is a product offered by Disney PhotoPass Service. PhotoPass photos can be purchased individually, but when you purchase Memory Maker, you receive unlimited digital downloads of all your PhotoPass photos taken during your Memory Maker window for one price. So the more photos you take, the more value you receive!

Which Disney PhotoPass photos are included with Memory Maker?
Anywhere Disney PhotoPass captures your photo during your Memory Maker window, you’re entitled to download that image as part of your active Memory Maker entitlement.

This includes PhotoPass photos taken at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, Character Experiences, either Disney PhotoPass Studio, iconic locations such as in front of Cinderella Castle, Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple, Enchanted Tales with Belle, and all attraction and dining locations with PhotoPass capture.

Magic Shots, which add Disney Characters and other fun surprises to your photos after they’re taken, are also included with Memory Maker!

Does Memory Maker offer any exclusive photo opportunities?
While all guests can view attraction videos from Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror as well as Animated Magic Shots in their account, an active Memory Maker entitlement is required to download, save and share them. (And, remember that a MagicBand linked to your account is required for you to collect and view attraction videos)

Can my Memory Maker entitlement include my travel party’s photos?
Absolutely! If you’re linked to others in your party through My Disney Experience Family & Friends and they choose to share their photos taken during your Memory Maker window with you, you’ll have the ability to download them. So, if you’re traveling with friends and family, only one party needs to purchase Memory Maker and then you can all share it!

When should I purchase Memory Maker?
Memory Maker can be purchased before, during or after your Walt Disney World Resort vacation. But when you buy early, you save: When you purchase three or more days prior to the start of your vacation, the price is $169. If you purchase during or after your vacation, the price is $199.

If you think Memory Maker is right for you, I would encourage you to purchase it prior to your vacation, as the less time you spend figuring out which photos you’re going to buy, the more time you have to make the memories, take another ride on Space Mountain, or enjoy a Dole Whip! Plus, that $30 discount leaves you a little extra spending money!

Have other questions? Let me know in the comments, or give the Disney PhotoPass Guest Support Team a call at 407-560-4300!

Memory Maker is subject to the applicable terms and policies available here. Includes photos taken during the applicable Memory Maker Window as defined in such terms (generally, photos taken (i) within one day for the One Day product or (ii) within 30 days from the date of first activation for standard Memory Maker). A MagicBand is required to receive certain attraction photos and other digital content. Online registration required. Disney PhotoPass Photos in your account will expire pursuant to the expiration policy available here. Downloads are restricted to personal use only. Not responsible for missing, lost or damaged photos. Subject to restrictions and change without notice. Valid theme park admission required for certain photo locations.

Top 5 Best Character Dining Experiences at Disney World

There are so many great places to eat at Disney World! Whether you are a picky eater or a foodie aficionado, you will love most of the restaurants at the Walt Disney World Resort. Character dining is a great option for families with kids who want to see the characters without having to use a FastPass or wait in long lines in the theme parks.

Here are the five best character dining experiences at Disney World:

  1. Chef Mickey’s at Disney’s Contemporary Resort: We love just about everything about Chef Mickey’s! Chef Mickey’s has a HUGE buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with such a variety that everyone in the family is sure to leave stuffed! Plus, you get to eat with all of the fab five classic Disney characters- Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto. This is also a great place to celebrate a birthday or special occasion!
  2. Garden Grill at Epcot: Situated in the Land pavilion in Future World, Garden Grill offers a relatively intimate character dining experience. With a smaller restaurant, characters tend to spend more time with families here and even make it back around to your table more than once. We also love the all you can eat meals served family style right to your table. With gooey cinnamon rolls for breakfast or a platter of meats for lunch and dinner, everyone in the family is sure to find something they love!
  3. 1900 Park Fare at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa: This is a great meal for the whole family, but especially little princesses. You can choose from breakfast with Alice in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter, Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, and Tigger or dinner with Cinderella, Prince Charming, Lady Tremaine, Anastasia, and Drizella. The stepsisters are so funny and offer some really fun and funny interactions. (Tip: Be sure to try the strawberry soup!)
  4. Tusker House at Disney’s Animal Kingdom: You can enjoy an expansive breakfast, lunch, or dinner buffet with Donald, Daisy, Mickey, and Goofy in their safari gear. Although breakfast is your standard fare, lunch and dinner offer some more unique, African-inspired options. (Tip: Book a late breakfast so you can try a bit from both the breakfast and lunch menu)
  5. Hollywood & Vine at Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Breakfast at Hollywood & Vine is one of the best meals for toddlers and preschoolers because you get to eat with the Disney Junior characters! This upbeat and exciting meal plays some of your little ones’ favorite Disney Junior songs while they meet Sofa the First, Doc McStuffins, Vampirina, and Roadster Racer Goofy.

What has your best character dining experience been?

Top 5 Best Disney World Pools at Walt Disney World Resort Hotels

Many families plan a day off from the parks during a Disney World vacation to let the kids rest and relax. There are lots of great activities that you can enjoy like shopping at Disney Springs, horseback riding at Fort Wilderness, carriage rides through Port Orleans, and swimming at your hotel’s pool. With so many resorts to choose from, you may be wondering which Walt Disney World Resorts offer the best pools. Here is our list of our five favorite Disney World pools.

  1. Stormalong Bay at Disney’s Beach & Yacht Club Resorts: Disney’s Beach Club Resort and Disney’s Yacht Club Resort have the best pool at the Walt Disney World Resort. They share Stormalong Bay, a three acre “water wonderland.” Stormalong Bay features a lazy river, a pirate ship water slide (one of the tallest water slides at Disney, by the way), a sand-bottomed pool, beach area for the kids to build sand castles, and so much more. The whole family will love splashing and playing at Stormalong Bay.
  2. The Lava Pool at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort: The Lava Pool will let you feel like you’ve traveled to Hawaii for the day. Relax under the waterfall while the kids slide down the volcano themed water slide or play on the new tiki-themed water playscape that was built just for them. Plus, the Lava Pool offers a great view of Magic Kingdom’s nighttime fireworks spectacular, Happily Ever After!
  3. The Big Blue Pool at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort: Disney’s Art of Animation Resort features the largest non-waterpark pool at Disney World, the Big Blue Pool! Your kids will love the Finding Nemo theme of the Big Blue Pool, complete with its own underwater soundtrack with voices of their favorite characters from the movie. There’s also a splash pad and zero depth entry in the main pool, making it a great choice for families with little ones on a budget.
  4. Fuentes del Morro Pool at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort: The Fuentes del Morro pool at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort is a pirate’s paradise centered around an old Spanish fortress. Swashbucklers of all ages will love the two water slides, water cannons, and zero depth entry pool while the littlest pirates can splash and play at the shipwreck themed water play area full of mini water slides, crow’s nest, and tipping bucket.
  5. The Dig Site at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort: The Dig Site at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort is home to The Lost City of Cibola Pool and waterslide. The complex is centered around a 50 foot pyramid, resembling ancient Mayan ruins, with water rushing down the steps. You’ll also find the largest outdoor hot tub at Disney World here, with room for up to 22 guests!

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

Sushi is a very popular food among guests of all backgrounds so if you’re a sushi lover, you may not want to go your entire vacation without any. There are a number of places where you can order sushi at Disney World, but today we’re going to share with you the top seven spots. It’s that small ball of vinegar-flavored cooked rice with fish (usually raw) or vegetables that makes sushi, well, sushi. Rolls count too.

  • Female sushi chefs are onstage at Tokyo Dining at the Japan Pavilion in Epcot, rolling out favorites such as the Fire Cracker Roll with tempura shrimp, a touch of jalapeño and Sriracha drizzle, or the Tropical Roll with salmon and avocado topped with fried plantain and mango-sweet chili coulis. You can be more straightforward with nigiri (raw salmon, scallops, sea bream and other fish) on a small ball of rice with a dab of wasabi. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
  • (Quick Tip- If you are just looking for a quick snack of sushi at Disney World, stop by the kiosk just outside of the Japan pavilion or even Katsura Grill!)

  • California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort counts sushi as one of its top appetizers (or we can make a meal of it). From a California Combo Roll with jumbo lump crab, avocado, cucumber and shrimp tempura to a snazzy Truffle-Scented Tofu Roll with avocado, jicama, quinoa, crispy fingerling potatoes, silken tofu and truffle emulsion, there are six inventive rolls on the menu. Dinner daily.
  • At Disney’s Polynesian Resort, Kona Island offers sushi for lunch and dinner in a casual setting in the upstairs lobby. We like the vegetable nigiri, six pieces of seasonal veggies on vinegar-flavored rice. Or try the Hamachi Tuna-Cilantro roll or classic California Roll with lump crab, citrus mayo, cucumber and avocado. Lunch and dinner daily.

  • Disney Springs has two spots for sushi: Morimoto Asia and Splitsville. The chefs put on a dazzling show at the sushi bar at Morimoto Asia with favorites like the Spider Roll with tempura soft shell crab, spicy mayo, and asparagus; Eel and Avocado Roll, and the Spicy Salmon Roll. But the pièce de résistance is the Sushi and Sashimi Platter for four to six guests that includes chilled whole lobster, Alaskan king crab, oysters, shrimp, nine pieces of nigiri and 14 pieces of sashimi. Splitsville Luxury Lanes (yes, the luxury bowling lanes) has two sushi bars and offers 10 rolls – try the Ninja Crunch with fried salmon, krab, tempura crunch and salmon drizzled with spicy mayo and eel sauce. Both locations are open for lunch and dinner daily.
  • Kimonos at the Walt Disney World Swan Hotel offers one of the largest selections of sushi at Walt Disney World Resort, with seven cooked sushi rolls and 10 raw sushi rolls. From tempura asparagus to a Cajun Roll with spicy crawfish, there’s something for every palate. Open daily for dinner (nightly karaoke too!).
