Five Universal Orlando Resort Recipes to Make at Home

We all have favorite theme park snacks, right? It can be tough when you’re craving a butterbeer, but can’t stop by the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to pick one up. So, we have the next best thing! Make one at home! You can make these four amazing Universal Orlando Resort recipes at home to help get you by until your next Universal Orlando Resort vacation. Enjoy!

Butterbeer Recipe from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

butterbeer recipe

One of the most iconic snacks from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter or even all of Universal Orlando Resort is butterbeer. Butterbeer is served chilled, frozen, or warm (seasonally) inside of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. You can find this sweet butterscotch flavored treat in the Three Broomsticks, Leaky Cauldron, Hog’s Head, and carts throughout the Wizarding World.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup light or dark brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 6 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon  salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon rum extract
  • 4 bottles (12 oz. bottles) cream soda

Directions:

  1. In a small saucepan over medium, combine the brown sugar and water. Bring to a gentle boil and cook, stirring often, until the mixture reads 240 F on a candy thermometer.
  2. Stir in the butter, salt, vinegar and 1/4 heavy cream. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
  3. Once the mixture has cooled, stir in the rum extract.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar mixture and the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Use an electric mixer to beat until just thickened, but not completely whipped, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  5. To serve, divide the brown sugar mixture between 4 tall glasses (about 1/4 cup for each glass). Add 1/4 cup of cream soda to each glass, then stir to combine. Fill each glass nearly to the top with additional cream soda, then spoon the whipped topping over each.

To make your butterbeer most like the original version served in the parks, you will want to freeze this recipe since it served hot.

We even have a Harry Potter recipe card that you can print out to save your butterbeer recipe to make again and again!

Fried PB&J with Bananas Sandwich Recipe from Halloween Horror Nights

Photo: Universal Orlando Resort

Although Universal Orlando Resort will not be hosting Halloween Horror Nights in 2020, you can still enjoy a delicious treat from the nation’s premier Halloween event!

The first step to enoying these fried pb&j with bananas sandwich is to make the secret ingredient that makes this sandwich unbelievable… FUNNEL CAKE BATTER!

Funnel Cake Batter Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups of whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups of all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Directions:

  • In a large bowl, mix the milk and eggs together.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Next, stir the bowl of dry ingredients into the large bowl of wet ingredients and mix until smooth.
  • Set aside for later.

Fried PB&J with Bananas Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of thick cut, white bread
  • 1 ½ tablespoons of creamy peanut butter
  • 1 ½ tablespoons of grape jelly
  • ½ banana sliced
  • 1 teaspoon chocolate syrup
  • ½ cup funnel cake batter
  • 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar
  • Canola oil (I would get at least 48 oz.)

Directions:

  • Preheat a large, heavy bottomed pot or large fry pan with canola oil until it reaches 350 degrees (use a candy thermometer to check temp).
    • You can also use a dutch oven or stock pot to fry as well. Whatever floats your boat… or in this case, sandwich.
    • For the canola oil, you’ll want around 2 inches or so. You want to be able to fully submerge the sandwich in the oil.
    • If you don’t have a candy thermometer (which I did not), you can tell the oil is ready when it’s shimmering with a whiff of smoke.
  • Spread creamy peanut butter evenly on one slice of bread.
  • Spread grape jelly evenly on another slice of bread.
  • Pause to lick any peanut butter or jelly you may have gotten on your fingers.
  • Slice the banana and place onto the piece of bread with the peanut butter.
  • Close sandwich and submerge into the bowl of funnel cake batter until completely covered.
  • Place the sandwich into the preheated oil but be careful! I recommend using tongs or a large slotted spoon.
  • Fry until golden brown on both sides.
  • Remove from oil and place onto paper towels to absorb the excess oil.
  • Drizzle as much chocolate syrup as you’d like and garnish with powdered sugar. I love A LOT of chocolate as you can probably tell in the picture!
  • Lastly, turn on the Halloween Horror Nights Spotify Playlist, close your eyes, and munch away. It’s almost like you’re back on the fog covered streets… almost.

Are you ready to start counting down to Halloween Horror Nights 2021?!

Guacamole Recipe from Antojitos

You can celebrate Cinco de Mayo anytime with this guacamole recipe from Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food in Universal CityWalk.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 teaspoon of jalapeños (diced)
  • 1 teaspoon of tomatoes (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon of red onions (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon olives (finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon of kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon of cilantro
  • 1 teaspoon of lime juice
  • A drizzle of olive oil

Directions:

  1. First, let’s get fancy and get a bunch of little bowls and divide all the ingredients up into them. Then, let’s get mixing!
  2. Put the jalapeños in a large bowl (if you don’t like spiciness, skip this step.)
  3. Carefully cut the avocado in half and discard the pit by inserting the blade into the seed using a quick and gentle cutting movement, then twist and remove. Gently scoop the avocado with a spoon and place in a bowl.
  4. Add the red onion, tomatoes, cilantro, salt, and olives to the bowl.
  5. Add a drizzle of olive oil.
  6. Mash and mix all the ingredients together using the back of a large spoon or fork, then mix in the lime juice.
  7. Shape it into a perfect little guac mountain and garnish with extra cilantro or tomatoes.
  8. Get your favorite chips and get your guac on!

Blast the mariachi music, throw those chips in a bowl, and get that salt shaker ready. It’s time to fiesta!

Photo: Universal Orlando Resort

You can bring a taste of Universal’s comfort food to your home with the Big Apple Grilled Cheese recipe from TODAY Cafe. This fun twist on grilled cheese combines the savory flavors of melted cheesiness and tomatoes with the crisp sweetness of apples all in one sandwich. It’s a great lunch option for your kids or for the big kid that’s in all of us.

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of white bread
  • 2 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 2 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 1 slice of pepper jack cheese
  • 1 tablespoon roasted plum tomato
  • 2 teaspoons unsalted butter
  • 4 thin slices of Red Delicious apple

Directions:

  1. Butter two slices of white bread with softened butter
  2. Remove the core of the apple and cut into 4 wedges
  3. Thinly slice one wedge of apple and set aside for later
  4. Place bread butter side down into non-stick fry pan on medium heat
  5. Begin to build the sandwich by laying the pepper jack and Swiss cheese on one slice
  6. Allow the cheese to begin to melt from the heat below
  7. Once the cheese begins to soften, place apples and tomatoes on top of the slice with cheddar
  8. Using a spatula, flip the side with the pepper jack onto the other side and press for one minute
  9. Ensure that both sides are golden brown, remove from pan and place onto cutting board
  10. Cut in half and enjoy the cheesiness!
  11. Serve with your favorite side of fruit, potato salad, or whatever your heart desires

Bonus: it’s an easy recipe to tackle for those of us who aren’t necessarily cooking savvy.

Four Universal Orlando Resort Recipes to Make at Home

Mini Pumpkin Donuts with Green Icing Recipe

This is the perfect pumpkin donut recipe to bring a little Halloween Horror Nights to your home. Not only are they deliciously pumpkin flavored, they’re also mini and very cute!

Photo: Universal Orlando Resort

Makes 24 Mini Pumpkin Donuts

Ingredients:

  • 1  cup sugar
  • 4  teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1⁄2 teaspoons salt
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ cup of pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 eggs
  • 1⁄4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 cups flour (plus a little more if dough is sticky)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Green icing or white icing + green food coloring (from local grocery store for topping)

Directions

  • In a large bowl mix the sugar, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice, salt, and nutmeg together.
  • Add eggs, milk, and melted butter. Beat well.
  • Add 3 cups of the flour, beating until blended. Add one more cup of flour and beat well. The dough should be soft and sticky but firm enough to handle. If you feel it’s necessary, add up to 1/2 cup more flour.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and chill for (at least) one hour.

During your hour break, turn on the Halloween Horror Nights Spotify Playlist and imagine yourself standing in the fog. Now it’s time for the fun part.

  • Remove your dough from the fridge and begin heating about 1 inch of oil to 360℉ in a large metal skillet or dutch oven.
  • Working half the dough at a time, roll it out on a floured surface to about ½ inch thickness.
  • Cut out circles using a mini donut cutter or small biscuit or cookie cutter, really anything that can give you a mini donut shape.
    • For the center, I actually use the cap off a soda bottle to cut the holes. (Life hack!)
  • Gently drop the donuts a little away from you in batches into the hot oil.
  • As they begin to puff, flip them over with metal tongs and continue to flip a few more times as they cook. They will take about 2-3 minutes in total and will be a lovely golden brown color all over.
  • Remove donuts from the oil and set them on top of paper towels draped over a plate.
  • Grab the green icing you purchased from your local grocery store and drizzle over donuts as much as you’d like!
    • If you’re unable to find green icing, you can mix green food coloring in any white frosting.
  • For a little more fun, you can even crush up some cookie crumbles and lay the donuts on top to resemble a spooky little pumpkin patch.
  • Take a photo and ENJOY!

  • January–July: Speculate about HHN.
  • July–August: Cry.
  • August–December: Count down to 2021.

Trust me, I get it. I spend most of my year thinking about, planning for, and counting down to Halloween Horror Nights. It’s by far my favorite seasonal event at Universal Orlando Resort. Basically, it’s every horror fanatic’s dream event.

Below, I’ve compiled all of my favorite ways to scratch that terrifying itch for you so we can stop crying and start screaming.

WARNING: these tactics are not for the faint of heart.

Universal Studios Florida

  • Get as close to the full HHN experience as possible by braving Frankenstein’s Lab and Jack the Clown’s Carnival in this year’s Tribute Store, a glorious homage to the HHNs of yesteryear.
    • Between the themed rooms, spooky sound effects, and exclusive merchandise and food and drink offerings, HHN superfans will feel perfectly at home here.
    • Pro Tip: Keep an eye peeled for Easter eggs and throwbacks to years past!
  • Explore the cursed film set and archeological dig site that comprise the queue of Revenge of the Mummy.
    • If the eerie shadows and haunting music aren’t enough to make you sweat, you can always forfeit your soul to Imhotep!
    • Pro Tip: If you’re brave enough, try sticking your hand into one of the glowing slots in the walls.
  • Head over to Louie’s this fall for everyone’s favorite HHN cuisine — pizza fries.
  • Laugh — and scream — your head (or arm) off at Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show.
    • Come for the dark humor, stay for the in-depth look at how make-up and special effects combine to create your favorite big-screen monsters.
  • Get your heart pounding with a ride on Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit.
    • Racing through the nearby buildings may bring back memories of the paranormal activities they used to house…
    • Pro Tip: There are plenty of on-theme songs to choose, including one you might remember from the HHN29 show Academy of Villains: Altered States.

Islands of Adventure

13 Ways to Get your Halloween Horror Nights Fix Until Next Year's Event

  • Take a treacherous journey into the Skull Island: Reign of Kong queue.
    • If prehistoric monsters and a cannibalistic witch aren’t enough, the jump-scares from the natives of Skull Island offer all the HHN vibes you could dream of.
    • After you survive the queue, keep the adrenaline pumping by coming face-to-face with King Kong himself on the ride.
  • Pay a visit to Blue at her Raptor Encounter.
    • Dagger-like teeth + extreme stealth = jump-scare heaven.
    • Pro Tip: Velociraptors are deadly intelligent — but you may be able to snap a picture with Blue if you’re quick enough.
  • Chat it up with the feisty Mystic Fountain in Sinbad’s Bazaar.
    • An ordinary object possessed by a mischievous spirit? That’s the plot of at least a dozen horror movies.
  • Embrace the occult at Star Souls – Psychic Readings.
    • Nothing makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up quite like an eerily accurate psychic reading.
    • Pro Tip: Leave your skepticism at the door for the best chance of uncovering your fate.

Bonus Horror

13 Ways to Get your Halloween Horror Nights Fix Until Next Year's Event
Photo: Universal Orlando Resort
  • Brave the terrifying plunges of Kala & Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides at Universal’s Volcano Bay.
    • If you close your eyes, the feeling of the trap door dropping out from under you is almost comparable to an HHN jump-scare.
  • Let the churning rapids and chopping waves of TeAwa The Fearless River give you an adrenaline rush.
    • For bonus terror, simply envision a horrific sea monster chasing you as you’re swept along.
  • Take a break from the fear and enjoy a S’mores Sundae from The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen.
    • It’s not quite the same as s’mores fries…but it’s still delicious!
  • Dive into the horrific void that is the internet.
    • If you’re craving lore, rumors, or speculation, there are enough online HHN forums to keep a ghost busy for all eternity.
    • Pro Tip: Follow the official HHN Twitter and, if you’re brave enough, send a tweet to the demon who runs the account.

The good news: by the time you work up the courage to take on all of the tactics listed above, it may already be time for next year’s Halloween Horror Nights AND you just had a horrifyingly good time at Universal Orlando Resort. You’re welcome.

If you have any other tips to help your fellow horror junkies get their Halloween Horror Nights fix, be sure to leave them in the comments below, or share them on TwitterFacebook, or Instagram with #HHN!

15 Halloween Horror Nights Tips So You Experience It Like a Pro

From the Universal Orlando Resort Blog:

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights will probably be unlike anything you have ever experienced. It’s so fun and terrifying at the same time. Since this limited time event goes so quickly, we hope these 15 Halloween Horror Nights tips will help you make the most of your time in the park.

BEFORE YOU GO…

1. Have a Game Plan

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

There’s a lot to see and do at Halloween Horror Nights, so it helps to plan ahead. What are the haunted houses you really want to experience? Which scare zones must you hit? Which attractions do you want to ride to take a break from the screams? Check out the event map, talk it out with your friends and come up with a list of the must-dos.

2. Make Sure You’re Well Rested

Halloween Horror Nights kicks off at 6:30p on event nights and closes in the wee hours of the morning. You don’t want your fatigue to be the reason you head home early! Take a nice afternoon nap, grab a coffee, or whatever it takes to help you feel rejuvenated for the event.

3. Dress Comfortably (And Check Your Footwear)

I can’t stress this enough. Remember, Halloween Horror Nights is a very intense event, and we all react differently to being scared (some run, some crouch, some freeze and some flail). Make sure you’re dressed appropriately for whatever your coping mechanism may be.

And wear comfortable shoes. The only thing worse than being stalked by a horrifying chainsaw clown is trying to escape them in a pair of shoes you regret wearing.

4. Be Mindful of Your Hair Style

This may seem kind of random, but this ties to tip #3. You’re going to be pretty active during your visit, so make sure you’re rocking a hair style that works for you in the horror environment. Sometimes, I wear my hair away from my face so I can see everything that’s happening (and it keeps me cooler).

5. Try to Carry as Little as Possible

If you can, try to carry only the essentials with you during your visit, like your car keys, wallets, diaper (if you’re really that scared). You won’t want to lug a huge bag around all night. This will also help you move a little quicker through the Security line.

WHILE YOU’RE HERE…

6. Take a Picture of Where You Parked

Because your memory is going to be jam-packed with all of the frights you experienced—and it’s really important to find your car at the end of the night.

7. Visit the Park During the Day

If you visit Universal Studios Florida during the day and have an admission ticket for Halloween Horror Nights that evening, you’ll have a huge advantage over guests who are only attending the event. When the park closes for daytime operation and begins the switchover to Halloween Horror Nights, you’ll actually be held in a designated area in park until the event opens. Then, once it starts, you’ll be released into the event – so you’re already in park while others are just starting to enter the front gate. This will help you get to those haunted houses a little bit quicker.

8. Arrive Early

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

If you choose not to visit the park during the day, I highly recommend you arrive early. Give yourself time to park, go through Security and venture through Universal CityWalk to Universal Studios. You can knock out some of the haunted houses pretty quickly if you’re one of the first inside the event.

9. Go Against the Grain

Halloween Horror Nights is sensory overload and often times, guests stop at the first haunted house or scare zone they see. Don’t be afraid to do the opposite. Once you get into the park, consider going straight to the back and to the furthest house. There’s a good chance that the wait times are going to be shorter.

10. Enjoy the Scare Zones

A lot of people rush through the scare zones – and I get it. You’re being stalked by scareactors and you’re just trying to make it to the other side. But try to find a spot where you can just watch the action in the streets. Sometimes, there are special show moments in the scare zones that you may miss if you just rush through. Plus, it’s SO entertaining to watch other folks get scared.

11. Take Time to Ride the Rides

People come to Halloween Horror Nights for the scares…but make sure you take a moment to experience some of the attractions as well. The wait times are often shorter during the event than they are during the day. Plus, the rides will provide you a nice break from the screams.

12. Keep Your Eyes Peeled

Remember the coping mechanisms mentioned earlier? Well, one we see pretty often is people covering their eyes. If you can, try not to do this. There are a ton of details and easter eggs you’ll miss if you aren’t looking. Trust me – no matter how scared you are, try (your best) to keep your eyes open. Besides, who wouldn’t WANT to get a good look at the scareactors that are preying upon them? Okay, maybe not…

13. Stay Hydrated and Grab Food

You’re going to scream…a lot! And screaming takes a ton of energy. Make sure you drink water (or whatever your beverage of choice is…I won’t judge!) throughout the night to stay hydrated. And grab food—you don’t want to be hangry. You can either grab dinner prior to your visit or take advantage of all of the eateries in the park. To really amp up your night, consider a Scareactor Dining experience.

14. Play a Game While You’re Waiting in the Queues

One way to make time go by a little faster while you’re waiting in a queue is to play a mobile game. Check out the new TERROR TRIVIA game in The Official Universal Orlando Resort App. You can test your knowledge on this year’s haunted houses and all things Halloween Horror Nights.

15. Take Photos

If you didn’t post about it, did it really happen? Make sure to capture the moments and take selfies and photos throughout the event. The visuals help when you’re recounting your experience with your friends. And they make great profile pics. Make sure you tag us with #HHN28!

There you have it, fifteen Halloween Horror Nights tips to get the most out of your Halloween Horror Nights visit. Any tips you would add? Let me know in the comments below.

If you haven’t already, choose an event night now through Nov. 3.

EVENT TICKETS

First, you’re going to need to get into the event. There are different ticket options available for purchase. If your heart can only take one night of screams, go for the single-night ticket. By purchasing your ticket online, you can save up to $52 on select nights.

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

However, for the truly brave, there is also the multi-night ticket. These petrifying passes cost less than a single night, purchased at the gate, when you buy online! Choose from these four options:

  • Rush of Fear Pass: Get the first 10 event nights for less than the price of a single night at the gate when you buy online.
  • Frequent Fear Pass: Get up to 21 nights for less than the price of a single night at the gate when you buy online—including EVERY Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday event night, PLUS the first weekend and last Friday.
  • Frequent Fear Plus Pass: Get up to 28 nights, including all Sunday through Friday event nights, plus the first and last Saturday nights.
  • Ultimate Frequent Fear Pass: Valid EVERY night for maximum fear. (Are you sure you can handle this!?)

You can also upgrade your experience by purchasing a Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass. This will allow you to skip the regular lines once per haunted house, plus participating rides and attractions. With 10 haunted houses (more than ever before), five terrifying scare zones, and one powerhouse show, this is the best way to make sure you’re getting your desired fill of fright.

SCARY GOOD UPGRADES

Do you spend every other season waiting for Fall to roll around?  Do you hit up Williams of Hollywood during every trip to Universal Studios Florida to get new Halloween decorations? Do you get joy out of watching your friends scream as they cling to you while walking through a haunted house? Then these VIP experiences are for you.

Behind-The-Screams: Unmasking the Horror Tour

FEARSOME FEASTS

(Photo: Universal Orlando Resort Blog)

The monsters aren’t going to be the only thing growling throughout the night. Make sure to think about your stomach and book a spot for our Scareactor Dining Experience at Universal Studios’ Classic Monsters Cafe.

You get to chow down on an all-you-care-to-eat themed dinner buffet and get pics (if you’re brave enough) with scareactors. Take home the nightmare of your frightful feast with a digital download of one photo taken during your dining experience. If your friends and family aren’t brave enough to dine with the scary monsters like you are, grab dinner in Universal CityWalk before the event starts.

Also, be sure to keep an eye out in the park during the event for new food and beverage options exclusive to Halloween Horror Nights. From tantalizing to terrifying, you won’t believe these treats aren’t a trick.

Each tour features a guided walkthrough of select houses, shining a light on the darkness of Halloween Horror Nights. You’ll receive a commemorative Halloween Horror Nights lanyard and hear about all the creative efforts that go into delivering the spookiest experience possible.
