7 Fun Facts About Castaway Cay, Disney’s Private Island Paradise

How much do you know about Castaway Cay? No matter how many times you’ve been to Disney’s private island paradise, there’s a good chance that you still learn something new with each visit. If you’re looking forward to your first day at this little slice of paradise in the Bahamas, here are seven fun facts about Castaway Cay …

Facts About Castaway Cay

The island is reserved exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests. If the Castaway Cay post office is open, be sure to stop by to mail a message (and brag) to friends back home. Also check out the merchandise you can only get on the island, like beachwear, hats and collectible pins with the Castaway Cay logo, at She Sells Sea Shells … and Everything Else!

You can walk right off the ship to the island. The dock built at Castaway Cay eliminates the need to tender, making the ship easily accessible throughout the day. Trams provide transportation to and from various points on the 1,000-acre island. All you’ll need is your Key to the World card to get on and off the ship as you please.

There’s something for everyone. Disney Imagineers designed Castaway Cay much like their ships, with unique activities and areas for every age group. Places for the family to spend time together are plenty, but when it’s time to do your own thing, kids can head to Scuttle’s Cove, teens to the secluded Hide Out and adults to the pristine Serenity Bay.

All that you need is included. From complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas to an all-you-care-to-eat lunch buffet and ice cream station, Disney has you covered. They even provide beach towels, wagons and strollers to make your day more comfortable. There isn’t much you’ll need to bring onto the island with you, except for of course plenty of sunblock and a good book!

There are plenty of Port Adventures options for your family. Just like in other Disney Cruise Line destinations, they work with local operators to offer excursions such as parasailing, deep sea fishing and boat tours. Plus, you won’t want to miss the activities exclusive to the island, including Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure, the Castaway Cay Walking and Kayak Nature Adventure and the teen-only Wild Side Adventure.

The island is stocked with toys for water sports enthusiasts. Water cycles, paddleboats, sea kayaks, sailboats, stand-up paddle boards, floats and snorkel gear are all available to rent. There’s also a watercraft ski adventure for the chance to drive a personal watercraft through mangroves and around the island.

You can stay cool even in the warm sunshine. Besides joining the water fun with one of the many activities listed above, the Pelican Plunge slide is a great way to cool off. When you need a break from the sun, shaded areas are located around the island, including covered seating near the lunch buffets and bars, In Da Shade Game Pavilion and private rental cabanas.

Top 10 Beaches You Can Visit on a Disney Cruise Line Vacation

If you love cruising to tropical locations, chances are you also love visiting beautiful beaches. Luckily for you, there’s no shortage of warm sand in the Bahamas and Caribbean where the Disney cruise ships frequent throughout the year. But deciding which glorious stretch of sand is a good fit for your family isn’t always easy. Here are the top ten beaches you can visit on a Disney Cruise Line vacation.

Our Port Adventures are the best way for your family to experience a hassle-free beach day, and we’ve worked with tour operators to take you to some of the best beaches in the places we visit. Here’s a look at my favorites in 10 of our tropical destinations:

Beaches You Can Visit on a Disney Cruise

1. Castaway Family Beach, Castaway Cay (Bahamas)
Most cruises from Florida include a stop at our private island, Castaway Cay, and if you’re traveling with little ones, Castaway Family Beach is the perfect spot for you. The beach is lined with umbrellas, chairs and hammocks for your complimentary use, and the water is sectioned off for swimming, floating and snorkeling. Plus, the Pelican Plunge water slide is within swimming distance from shore and the all-you-care-to-eat lunch buffet is steps away.

2. Blue Lagoon Island, Nassau (Bahamas)
This spectacular private island is just a half-hour boat ride from the port of Nassau. We offer several excursions there with different options for what your family would like to do, whether that’s swimming with dolphins, snuggling with sea lions or swaying in hammocks! The family-owned island has all of the amenities you need, yet it’s set apart by its untouched natural environment and authentic Bahamian experience.

Beaches You Can Visit on a Disney Cruise

3. Playa Mia, Cozumel (Mexico)
With its water park, water trampolines and water bicycles (just to name a few!), Playa Mia is an active family’s paradise on the island of Cozumel. The full-facility beach also has plenty of space where you can relax, including lounge chairs both on the beach and by the pool. Our Cozumel Beach Break excursion is a convenient way to get time at this popular locale, with a delicious lunch buffet included!

4. Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman (Cayman Islands)
Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is famous for its long stretch of coral sand and clear blue water, and it’s just a short ride from the port. On our Family Beach Day at Tiki Beach Port Adventure, you’ll have access to full amenities there, including lounge chairs, fresh-water showers, a restaurant and not to mention a gorgeous view!

Beaches You Can Visit on a Disney Cruise

5. Magen’s Bay Beach, St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands)
With its calm waters and half-mile stretch of white sand, Magen’s Bay is home to St. Thomas’ premier beach. The beachside café in this untouched environment makes it a great option for families, especially on our Magens Bay Beach Break excursion, which also includes a stop at Drake’s Seat to enjoy the panoramic view of the bay.

6. Orient Bay Beach, St. Maarten (West Indies)
Known as the “French Riviera of the Caribbean,” Orient Bay is the most famous beach in St. Maarten. Adventures like our Afternoon Beach Bash Tour and French Riviera Beach Rendezvous are great options if you want to just relax in this stunning locale. For a more active day, our Family Fun, Beach and Nature Walk adds the option to boogie board and join a guided walk through part of a nature reserve.

7. Isla Verde Beach, San Juan (Puerto Rico)
Isla Verde Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico is especially popular for families with its gentle waves, huge expanse of white sand and access to amenities. If you’re visiting San Juan during your cruise, you can join our Isla Verde Beach Escape or our San Juan Family Beach Day, both including a lunch buffet and the chance to play beach volleyball!

Beaches You Can Visit on a Disney Cruise

8. Rose Hall Beach, Falmouth (Jamaica)
Rose Hall Beach in Jamaica is home to several upscale resorts, adding an air of exclusivity to this beautiful stretch of sand. We give Disney cruisers the chance to enjoy time at one of these beautiful resorts on our Resort Beach Break – All Inclusive Port Adventure. Access to the resort’s amenities, including pools, slides and dining, makes this excursion a great day for families.

9. Cane Garden Bay Beach, Tortola (British Virgin Islands)
Tortola’s Cane Garden Bay is considered by many to be finest beach on the island. Restaurants, bars and shops are steps from the beach, making it an ideal spot for families. We just announced Tortola as a destination in 2016 and are working with local operators to develop family-friendly Port Adventures so you can enjoy this destination to its fullest. Stay tuned!

10. Crandon Park Beach, Miami (Florida)
Miami is one of our homeports for cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean, and no visit there is complete without stopping by one of the area beaches. My top pick for families is Crandon Park Beach, located on Key Biscayne in front of a sandbar that keeps the surf calm. This park also has an amusement center, picnic areas and plenty of other amenities for a comfortable family beach day.

All of these locations are beaches you can visit on a Disney Cruise Line vacation. Are there any other destinations that you’d like to add to this list?

From the Disney Parks Blog:

Aboard each of Disney Cruise Line’s cruises, Disney films come to life in unique and surprising ways. Whether you’re a fan of classic and live-action Disney films, Disney-Pixar, Star Wars or Marvel, here are just some of the ways to become immersed in your favorite stories on your next Disney cruise vacation. Here are our five favorite ways Disney Cruise Line brings Disney films to life onboard.

Youth Spaces

On every Disney ship, there’s an entire deck of spaces designed to inspire and entertain your children! Disney’s Oceaneer Club will transport your kids to places like Andy’s Room inspired by “Toy Story” and Frozen Adventures themed to the “Frozen” films. Kids can even meet some of their favorite Marvel Super Heroes or join the rebel alliance and pilot the Millennium Falcon.

Restaurants

Mealtimes are memorable experiences on a Disney cruise! Aboard each ship, dinner at Animator’s Palate brings the magic of Disney animation into the dining room with scenes and characters from popular Disney and Disney-Pixar films. Experiences may include a visit from Crush, the sea turtle from “Finding Nemo,” a montage of food-themed moments from Disney films, or an animated show about a hero’s journey through Disney and Pixar animation.

At Tiana’s Place restaurant on the Disney Wonder, themed to “The Princess and the Frog,” you’ll enjoy live jazz music and delicious food that draws inspiration from the flavors and ingredients of the Louisiana bayou, plus special touches from the movie like family photos and water-lily-shaped candleholders. On the Disney Magic, dinner at Rapunzel’s Royal Table, inspired by “Tangled,” transports you to the kingdom of Corona to celebrate Rapunzel’s birthday and the anniversary of her return home. You can let your hair down and sing with Flynn Rider while you are eating a feast fit for royalty!

Musicals

You and your little ones can sing your hearts out to some of the most iconic songs from Disney films while watching our Broadway-style musicals. Shows like “Disney Dreams…An Enchanted Classic” and “The Golden Mickeys” feature favorite characters from Disney films, such as Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Tiana, Anna and Elsa, Cinderella, Ariel, Timon and Pumbaa.

On the Disney Wonder and the Disney Fantasy, you can experience “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular” and follow Anna and Elsa on their journey to discover the meaning of sisterhood. On the Disney Dream, you’ll be treated to an original production of “Beauty and the Beast,” inspired by the live action movie, and aboard the Disney Magic, you can sing along with Rapunzel in “Tangled: The Musical” and Cinderella in “Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story.”

Deck Parties

During every Disney cruise, your family can enjoy a lively celebration at one of our spectacular deck parties! On most itineraries, you can live the pirate’s life at our deck party inspired by “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Select cruises also offer a Pixar Pals celebration or a deck party themed to “Frozen” featuring the famous royal sisters of Arendelle and their fun-loving Nordic companions. And when you celebrate Star Wars Day at Sea or Marvel Day at Sea, you’ll be treated to an epic deck show featuring tons of characters from these films.

Character Encounters

Character encounters are a plenty on each and every Disney cruise! In addition to seeing beloved characters from your favorite Disney films in our youth spaces, dining rooms, stage shows and deck parties, scheduled meet-and-greets take place all throughout the voyage, both on board and on our private island, Castaway Cay.  These character sightings create lasting memories and fantastic photo opportunities for guests of all ages!

Top 5 Things to Do on a Very MerryTime Cruise

From the Disney Parks Blog:

Photo: Disney

After embarking recently on my first Very Merrytime cruise aboard the Disney Dream, let me tell you – I think I have found a new holiday tradition for my family! If you’re anything like me and will gladly trade in white snow for the white sand beaches of Castaway Cay, read below for the top five things to do on a Very MerryTime cruise when you book one of these special holiday sailings!

Photo: Disney

1. Mickey’s Tree-Lighting Magic

When you walk onto your Disney Cruise Line ship on day one, your eyes will likely be immediately drawn to the three-deck-tall Christmas tree in the atrium. And while there is garland and other décor filling every nook and cranny, you also may notice one more thing – the lights aren’t on! Once you’re sailing off into the sunset, however, many of your favorite Disney characters will join you to change all of that. With holiday music, stories from different cultures as told by crew members and special opportunities for kids to get involved, this tree-lighting ceremony is much more than just an opportunity to make these festive lights come to life!

Photo: Disney

2. Santa’s Winter Wonderland Ball

What’s a holiday cruise without Santa and Mrs. Claus? That’s right, usher in these very special guests on each Very Merrytime sailing at Santa’s Winter Wonderland Ball. This special holiday gathering featuring Broadway-style entertainment, classic holiday tunes, your favorite characters and even a little magical “snow” overtakes the atrium and is sure to leave each and every guest in the holiday spirit.

Photo: Disney

3. Characters in holiday attire

While your favorite Disney characters are at the center of Mickey’s Tree-Lighting Magic Ceremony and Santa’s Winter Wonderland Ball, be sure to check your Navigator App for meet-and-greet times all throughout your sailing. Whether it’s Mickey in his winter sweater, Pluto with antlers or Goofy in a full-fledged Santa suit, these pictures are sure to provide both precious memories and a spot on your family’s Christmas card!

Photo: Disney

4. Did someone say gingerbread?

Did you know that each Disney Cruise Line ship features a life-size gingerbread house in the atrium? Each year, all four ships in the fleet create a unique house (from scratch!) and compete against each other for the most creative and whimsical creation. And while the competition has become an annual rite of passage Disney Cruise Line, it also fills the atrium of each ship with the smell of fresh gingerbread. If you want to try your hand at your own creation, be sure to check out the gingerbread cookie decorating classes offered onboard! Unlike the one in the atrium – you can actually eat yours!

Photo: Disney

5. Castaway Cay

As I mentioned earlier, my favorite thing to do for the holidays is trade in white snow for the white sand beaches on Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s private island. But even though you may be in the Bahamas, this slice of paradise is decked for the holidays as well – with a tropical flair, of course! A massive Christmas tree, holiday island music and even “snow” flurries await your family, guaranteeing that the only “blue” you’ll be feeling this holiday season is the color of the crystal-clear waters!

The holiday season is in full swing, and so are Very Merrytime cruises! Whether you’re planning a holiday voyage for this year or next, leave me a message below with your personal favorite cruising memories or what you’re most looking forward to during these special holiday sailings!

Don’t forget, Disney Cruise Line sails out of ports all over the world, including Port Canaveral, Florida; Miami, Florida; Galveston, Texas, and more!

Top 5 Reasons to Book a Disney Cruise from Miami

From the Disney Parks Blog:

Photo: Disney

If you’ve already had the opportunity to enjoy a Disney Cruise Line vacation, then you probably don’t need a new reason to take a Disney cruise. And with Disney Cruise Line itineraries sailings from various ports around the world, it can be hard to find the best fit for your family. With the Disney Magic taking its talents to South Beach, I thought I would take some time to share five reasons why you should book a Disney cruise from Miami – and why your family will love it, too!

Photo: Disney

Miami – need we say more?

The vibrance and uniqueness of Miami warrants a visit to this city in and of itself! Whether you want to visit one of two national parks, shop on designer fashion or local boutiques, dine on the “Floribbean” cuisine or check out the famous beaches, there is no shortage of culture and things for your family to experience together before or after your cruise. Book a pre- or post- stay and treat yourself to a few extra days of vacation!

Photo: Disney

Disney Magic

One of the biggest reasons I like to sail out of Miami is the ship that resides in this port – the Disney Magic! I’m sure you know that this is the first ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, but did you know that it is home to unique offerings such as the AquaDunk (I dare you to take the plunge!), an exclusive Broadway-style show, “Tangled: The Musical,” and one of my favorite themed dining spaces, Rapunzel’s Royal Table? If you haven’t been onboard in a while, it’s time to get reacquainted with this classic ship!

Photo: Disney

Marvel Day at Sea

Do you have any Marvel fans in your family? If so, Miami is the port for you! From January through March in 2020, the Disney Magic will sail exclusively out of this city on special Marvel Day at Sea sailings. During one special day at sea, the ship will be taken over by the Marvel universe. Picture it now: learn how to be like Captain America, meet Spider-Man, journey into the mystic arts with Doctor Strange and end your day with an action-packed entertainment stage show complete with fireworks fitting of – well, a super hero!

Photo: Disney

Miami is easy to access from anywhere!

Miami is one of the most popular ports in America, and it’s easy to see why! The “Magic City” is an easy drive from anywhere within the state of Florida, and with a bustling international airport, this is an ideal port city whether you reside in or outside the Sunshine State!

Photo: Disney

Ports of Call

Cruises from Miami sail anywhere from three-night voyages to the Bahamas to five-night sailings to the Western Caribbean – or if you’re up for an extra-long vacation, a 12-night transatlantic voyage will take you all the way to Barcelona! And best of all, every voyage to the Bahamas and Caribbean makes a stop at Castaway Cay, my favorite island paradise reserved just for Disney Cruise Line guests. Save me a seat on Serenity Bay, will you?

Even though I don’t need a specific reason to enjoy a Disney cruise from Miami, I think these are five pretty good ones (and these are just the beginning)! Leave a comment below and let me know your favorite reason to sail from this city. I hope to see you on board a sailing soon!

5 Places to Find Dessert on the Disney Dream During Your Disney Cruise

Cruising on the Disney Dream is a dream-come-true for anyone with a sweet tooth! Whether you take a three-, four- or five-night vacation aboard this Disney Cruise Line ship, you’ll have plenty of options for indulging in decadent desserts. You’ll need the energy for all the fun you’ll have on board, plus calories don’t count on vacation!

Check out the top five ways you can treat your sweet tooth with dessert on the Disney Dream…

1. Make a pit stop at Vanellope’s Sweets and Treats. Refuel at this dessert shop inspired by the arcade game from Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph.” Your family can celebrate your time aboard with a trophy filled with gelato or an ice cream sundae in a “Sugar Rush” racecar. If you can’t decide which ice cream flavor you want, Vanellope’s Sweets and Treats also has candy and baked treats to satisfy your cravings!

2. Cool down with an Eye Scream or Frozone treat. While you’re enjoying the sunshine up on deck, grab some soft-serve ice cream and scare-tastic toppings at Eye scream Treats. Named after the friendly, one-eyed monster Mike Wazowski from the Disney-Pixar animated feature “Monsters, Inc.,” this eatery has treats and a wide variety of flavors that will make you scream with joy! Or you can chill out with a cool Frozone refreshment by the pool. Inspired by the ice-creating hero from the Disney-Pixar movie “The Incredibles,” this poolside spot has refreshing, fruit smoothies for the entire family to enjoy.

3. Become a dessert connoisseur at Remy. Looking for more than an ice cream cone? Treat your taste buds to a five-course dessert menu served with coffee! The adult-exclusive Remy Dessert Experience features a rich dialogue with Remy’s Executive Chef and Pastry Chef, who will explain the history and evolution of each sweet selection. If you’re a dessert lover, this experience is perfect for you!

4. Save room for dessert at Palo’s brunch. Adults can indulge in a spectacular champagne brunch at Palo, which includes an all-you-care-to-eat buffet of international cheeses, made-to-order entrées, fresh pastries and, you guessed it, plenty of dessert! With tons of mini-sized desserts, you can treat your sweet tooth to a wide variety of flavors!

5. Brighten your day with dessert at Cabanas. Take a stroll along a beach boardwalk and grab a bite to eat at Cabanas. This restaurant offers guests a casual dining experience with food and beverage stations, breathtaking ocean views, and indoor and outdoor seating. Most importantly, it has a whole section dedicated to desserts like sundaes, cookies, cakes and fruit!

Three seven-night sailings to the Bahamas with a stop at Castaway Cay, plus a 14-night Panama Canal cruise, round out the departures from the Crescent City in early 2021.

Popular Itineraries from Texas and California on the Disney Wonder

The Disney Wonder will also return to the popular home ports of Galveston and San Diego in early 2021. On sailings from Texas, you can enjoy the white-sand beaches of the Western Caribbean on a series of four- and six-night cruises to Grand Cayman and Cozumel. One seven-night departure will feature stops at Key West, Nassau and Castaway Cay.

Following the season in New Orleans, the Disney Wonder heads to the West Coast for a variety of sailings to Baja and the Mexican Riviera departing from San Diego. On cruises ranging from three to seven nights, your family can hunt for gold aboard a pirate ship in Cabo San Lucas, embark on an off-road adventure in Ensenada or sunbathe on glittering sand beaches.

Castaway Cay is Disney’s private island paradise in the tropical waters of the Bahamas, reserved exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests. In a setting of crystal-clear turquoise waters, powdery white-sand beaches and lush landscapes, the 1,000-acre island offers one-of-a-kind areas and activities for every member of the family.
