Eight Things You Need to Know About Castaway Cay

From the Disney Parks Blog:

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

Most Disney cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean stop at Castaway Cay, Disney’s gorgeous private island paradise in the Bahamas. With a family beach, an adults only beach, water playgrounds, and more, your whole family will love spending the day here!

Once you choose your tropical getaway to Castaway Cay, be sure to read up on these eight things you need to know about Castaway Cay before you visit …

1. The island is your own slice of Bahamian paradise. Castaway Cay is reserved exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests, and only one ship docks there at a time. This means you get more of that powdery white sand to yourself as you enjoy the island’s lush landscape and turquoise waters. Plus, Bahamian shops and a post office add local flavor to your day in the Abacos.

2. All that you need for a fun beach day is included. Towels, beach chairs, umbrellas? We’ve got you covered. Lunch? A delicious all-you-care-to-eat buffet and soda fountains are steps away from the family beach. The only thing you need to bring is sunblock (though if you forget it, you can always purchase a bottle at one of the island’s shops).

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

3. It’s easy to get around. The dock at Castaway Cay means you’re one step closer to fun in the sun since you don’t need to take a tender boat from the ship. Then it’s just a short walk to the tram, which will take you to various points on the 1,000-acre island. Want a more adventurous way to explore? Rent a bicycle and stretch your sea legs!

4. The island is a haven for water sport enthusiasts. Take a banana boat thrill ride or cast off on a fishing tour. In addition to more than a dozen guided Port Adventures out on the water, paddleboats, water cycles, sea kayaks, sailboats, stand-up paddle boards and snorkel gear are all available to rent.

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

5. Your stateroom key card is gold. You’ll need it to get off and on the ship and make purchases on the island. Treat your family to frozen drinks at the Olaf-inspired Summertime Freeze or yourself to Bahamian specialty drinks at one of the bars. Then shop our collection of exclusive Castaway Cay merchandise at She Sells Sea Shells…and Everything Else!

6. There’s something for everyone. Just like on the ship, kids, tweens and teens have activities and spaces designed specifically for them. And while your little ones ages 3-12 are hanging out with the youth counselors at Scuttle’s Cove, you can get some “me time” at our pristine stretch of beach reserved for adults.

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

7. Castaway Cay has all the ingredients for fun and relaxation. Fly high above the island on a parasail adventure, snorkel in a 12-acre lagoon, or lounge in a hammock gazing at the crystal-clear waters. Start the day off right with yoga on the beach, or for the ultimate indulgence, schedule a massage in a private cabana at the adult-exclusive Serenity Bay.

8. Disney pals join the fun on the island, too. You won’t want to miss a warm hug from Olaf or a high-five from Goofy. Bring your camera for that perfect photo opp with Mickey and the gang wearing island attire in front of a picturesque backdrop—turquoise water, silky sand and swaying palm trees.

Top 10 Bermuda Shore Excursions with Disney Cruise Line

From the Disney Parks Blog:

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

In honor of Disney’s first-ever cruise to Bermuda, setting sail this month from New York City, here are the top 10 Bermuda shore excursions, so you can experience the best of this unique tropical island.

1. The South Shore beaches boast the island’s famous pink sand and turquoise surf. Spend the day relaxing at a pink-sand beach on the Horseshoe Bay Beach Transfer.

2. Bermuda is a cultural melting pot that harbors an eclectic blend of British, American and West Indian influences. While many Bermudian customs appear European (driving on the left side of the road, playing cricket, local pubs serving ale by the imperial pint), Bermudans share similarities with North America in their dialect and currency. Taste the European influence on the Dockyard Brewery Tour and Tasting.

3. When it comes to fashion, the island has a style that’s all its own—distinctive for Bermuda shorts, often worn with a jacket and tie as formal wear. You can get a glimpse of the luxurious Bermuda lifestyle on the Famous Homes and Hideaways Cruise.

4. At Admiralty House Park, you can watch cliff divers perform their graceful acts of remarkable athleticism. Or become a cliff diver yourself on the Hidden Gems Exploration Adventure.

5. The island is home to massive caves featuring stalactites and underground saltwater pools. Descend into a cavern on the Crystal Caves and Pink Flamingos excursion.

6. St. Peters Church, the oldest Anglican Church outside the British Isles, is home to a cultural treasure—the antique altar carved in 1615 by Bermuda’s first governor. Check it out during the Bermuda Island Drive.

7. Numerous coral reefs are in relatively shallow water, with virtually unlimited visibility, and are readily accessible from shore. Do some underwater exploring on the Snorkel Park Beach Adventure.

8. Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, built in 1846, is the oldest remaining cast-iron lighthouse in the world. Visit the lighthouse and other landmarks on the Scenic South Shore sightseeing excursion.

The boats and homes as seen from the harbor.. St. Georges, Bermuda.

9. The historic British settlement of Bermuda is dotted with colorful British Colonial architecture, fountains, gardens and plazas. Stroll the 400-year-old cobblestone streets of a picturesque colonial town on the Haunted History Tour of St. George’s.

10. Bermuda’s climate is sub-tropical, with an average annual temperature high of 81° F and low of 60° F. Enjoy the island’s comfortable temperatures with a round of golf at Belmont Hills Golf Club.

Each of Disney Cruise Line’s five- and six-night cruises from New York City to Bermuda include at least two days on the island, giving you more time to soak up the Bermuda lifestyle. Remember, when the ship’s in port, venture ashore.

Raspberry Macarons Recipe from Disney Fantasy’s Sweet on You

Sweet on You is one of my favorite new spots aboard the Disney Fantasy, not only for the amazing desserts but also for the super cute atmosphere that brings you into the world of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. One fun fact about the new space is that the artwork on the walls was created by the animators from the Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts.

(Photo: Disney Parks Blog)

The music playing in the background makes you feel as if you’re walking into a patisserie right off the streets of Paris, so it’s fitting that this premium sweet shop serves a variety of hand-crafted desserts, including macarons. The Disney Parks Blog recently shared the raspberry macarons recipe for you to make at home. When you’re sailing on a 7-night Disney Fantasy cruise, be sure to try out the other flavors, as I can attest that each one is delicious!

Raspberry Macarons Recipe from Disney Fantasy’s Sweet on You
Makes 20 macarons

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup almond blanched flour
  • 2/3 tbs egg whites, divided
  • ½ tsp red food coloring
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup purified water
  • 1 cup raspberry jam

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
2. Combine powdered sugar and almond flour in an electric mixer until fine. Add 1/3 tbs egg whites and food coloring to make a paste in the electric mixer.Note: Make sure the egg whites are room temperature before using.
3. Boil the sugar and water in a small pot and bring to 260 degrees F. Whip 1/3 tbs egg whites. Pour the hot sugar syrup into the egg whites on the side of the bowl and whip at a high speed until thickened to form the meringue.
4. Add 1/3 of the meringue to the almond flour mixture and combine, repeating with the rest of the meringue and making sure to deflate the mixture.
5. Fill a piping bag with a round #6 tip with the mixture. Place wax paper onto a baking sheet, and pipe the mixture into ¾ inch round discs onto the sheet. Let sit for 35 minutes before baking in the oven.
6. Place the macaroons in the oven and immediately turn down the oven temperature to 285 degrees F. Bake for ten minutes and then take out of the oven to cool.
7. When cool, turn over half of the macarons and pipe raspberry jam on the flat surface. Place another macaron on top of the jam.
